How to Make a Cupcake Box

Homemade Cake

When you think of giving someone a food gift you generally don’t think of a cupcake. You might think about a jar gift that contains all the dry ingredients to make brownies, soups or other foods. Or, you might consider giving that person a homemade cake or pie. But, when it comes to cupcakes most people think about kids and parties. However, a cupcake can be a really thoughtful gift. It can be given to someone in the hospital, a gradate or even as a wedding party favor. Of course, you’re not going to walk around carrying a cupcake and a plastic container with lid isn’t exactly gift wrap.

Whether you’ve got a regular cupcake or a jumbo one, a homemade cupcake or a store-bought one, you can easily make a gift box that allows the recipient to view the treat through a window on top. Sure, the cupcake will be delicious, but the finished box is so beautiful, it actually becomes a gift as well. The new owner can then gift someone else by recycling the box!

It can be a little challenging to find the perfect box. One that’s not too large but not too small. One that’s deep enough to hold a cupcake and one that has a lid. If you have a box around your house that will work, that’s great, but if not, you can find assorted boxes at a craft store. These are usually ones that are flat and you simply open them and tuck in the bottom tabs.

Whether you buy a box or you already have one it will need a lid. The lid can be one that is hinged or one that is completely removable. To make it easier on yourself the box and lid should be thin cardboard.

Cover the box with decorative paper. Scrapbook paper is ideal because you can instantly create a theme for the box. Choose themes like graduation, birthday or wedding or go with elegant choices like metallic silver or gold. You’ll find hundreds of choices at your local craft store or online. Wrap the box as you would a present. Or, when purchasing a box get one that’s already printed so you can skip the step of wrapping it.

Use a square object to make a pattern on top of the box – on the lid. This object should be just a little smaller than the lid itself. Draw around the square to make a smaller square on top and cut it out. It’s important that you make exact cuts along the lines of the drawing.

Cut a piece of cellophane to be almost the size of the lid itself. From the underside, apply a little glue around the perimeter of the opening. Position the cellophane over the opening and glue it in place. The cupcake box is finished and ready to use for a delicious gift the recipient will never forget! Make other sizes and shapes of the window boxes to gift dolls, stuffed animals, candles and more!
