How to Make a Bra Wallet

As-seen-on-TV products are very popular. When the commercials come on to advertise these products – everything from tools to food prep items to storage solutions – the 800 number displayed on the TV gets hit thousands of times. That’s because the products are so useful and so easy to order. Although these types of products are difficult to find in the store they’re also somewhat expensive to order from the TV ad. One such ad features a woman’s secret wallet, kept in her bra cup, that can hold money, credit cards and more. A product like this is handy but not worth the money they ask. This is especially true because most anyone can make the little pouch themselves – whether they sew or not.

All you need to make the hideaway wallet is a circle of fabric. With something so simple why would you pay twenty bucks or more for one? Although the bra wallet is really easy to make if you sew it can also be made with fabric glue for those who don’t sew. It can be made in your choice of fabrics, however, the material you choose is somewhat important to ensure the finished wallet isn’t bulky or scratchy.

Some materials slide easily and that’s the type of fabric you want to consider for this craft. Satin, nylon, tricot and similar materials are slick and will work perfectly. Bulky material, such as corduroy, felt or denim are not ideal. The material you choose should also have an attractive backside. Since the back of the material will be the inside of the wallet you don’t want to choose fabric where loose threads hang from the back. It takes very little material to make one of the bra wallets, and since most places require a purchase of at least a quarter of a yard, consider making the pouches for a couple of friends while you’re at it.

Use a cup, bowl or other round object to create the pattern for the wallet. The circle you draw should be between five and six inches in diameter. Draw one circle, cut it out, then fold it in half with right sides together. Cut across the fold of the circle then prepare to sew or glue the wallet. If you’ll be sewing the pouch shut simply stitch around the curved part of the circle. The straight part will be left open to allow for insertion of money, credit cards and other items. Be sure that, when you stitch the rounded area, you back-tack at the beginning and at the end. This will ensure the stitching doesn’t come out later.

If you will be gluing the wallet follow the steps above to cut the circle and to cut across the fold. Lay the two half circles on a table with the right sides facing downward. Spread the glue around the curved part of the half-circle. Position the other half-circle on top of it and allow glue to dry completely. Make sure the fabric glue you choose for this project states that it can be laundered.

After the glue is dry, or the stitching is done, sew or glue a piece of Velcro to each side of the opening. If you’re gluing it make sure it is completely dry before you use the wallet. If you’re really good at sewing you can install a zipper rather than using Velcro. If using Velcro trim it so that it is a very thin strip for each side of the wallet opening.
