How to Layer Hair

Layered Hair

If you’ve paid attention anytime you’ve been to a hair salon or to a barber, you’ve certainly heard of a layered haircut, or of the idea of layering hair. Layering hair is a popular technique used to give the hair a blended and full appearance. Layered hair is easier to manage than some other hairstyles because the layers essentially are the hairstyle and therefore require less styling after you shampoo. People layer their hair for a number of reasons. They might want to, for example, frame their face. They might layer their hair to get rid of unruly hair. They might layer their hair in order to add volume to their hair. They might even layer their hair to give themselves a wash and go look. Fortunately, layering your hair is something that you can do on your own if you are willing to give it a shot.

First thing that you need to do if you want to layer your hair is to get a pair of professional grade scissors for haircutting. You’ll want to make sure these scissors are especially sharp because if you have dull scissors, you’re more likely to end up with split ends or uneven layers.

Before you actually begin to cut the hair, you want to be sure you shampoo the hair completely. If your hair is thick, you might consider using a conditioner too. Once you’ve washed and conditioned your hair, make sure you rinse it extremely well. You can either towel dry it halfway, or you can just leave your hair wet when you get ready to cut it.

To start layering your hair, you’re going to want to brush your hair with a large-toothed comb before you attempt to layer. When you do this, be sure to get rid of any tangles you might have in your hair.

Next, you’re going to turn your head upside down, and using a finer-toothed comb, you’re going to comb your hair straight down toward the floor.

Now comes the tricky part where you need to have an extremely steady hand. You’ll want to use those professional grade scissors and cut straight across. The shortest layer on the top should be the same length as the hair you cut from the top of your forehead. The longest layer that you cut will be approximately three times the length of that layer on the top.

Check the layers both in the front and in the back by using two mirrors. This will help you get the best perspective on your hair and be able to tell how it looks from many angles.

Another way to layer your hair is with a pony tail cut. To do this, what you’re going to do is first put your hair into a tall pony tail on the top of your head, toward the middle. You’ll cut the ponytail straight across and when you release it, your hair will be layered.

You’ll probably need to trim your hair somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks to help it keep its layered shape. You’ll need to trim each layer during that process. If your hair is curly, you’ll want to straighten it before you layer it. If you try to layer curly hair, the layers probably won’t come out evenly.

Finally, be careful if you don’t want your haircut to be too short. You’ll want to cut just a few centimeters at a time and in between you’ll want to check them in the mirror to make sure that the hair is even throughout the entire layer. If you cut too much hair, it might be very difficult to correct the mistakes.
