How to Donate to “Locks of Love”

Ethnic Hair, Hair Highlights, Lake Worth, Locks of Love

You may give someone in need the shirt off your back, but would you give them the hair off of your head? For many people, giving of their hair is a much more personal gift than money or possessions. Yet every year, thousands of generous individuals lop off their locks for the charity “Locks of Love.” Dedicated to creating wigs for children who have lost or are unable to grow their hair due to medical conditions, “Locks of Love” collects ponytails from donors around the country. Could you be eligible to give such a donation to a child in need? Check out these rules:

1. Your hair must be more than 10 inches long at the nape of your neck.

2. You must not have bleached your hair (highlights included).

3. You must be able to place your ponytail in a plastic bag then ship it in a padded envelope.

Wait, that’s it? Yes, basically. Simple, isn’t it? Other than that all you have to do is dry the hair, braid it up, and send it on over to “Locks of Love” where they will weave it together with other donor ponytails to create a wig for a child in need.

There aren’t any special hairdressers to consult when donating. All that is required is that the hair be packaged as noted above. However, there are many stylists around the country who will offer free or discounted haircuts for those donating to “Locks of Love,” and others who will send out the donation for you. Check your stylist’s window for the “Locks of Love” decal or inquire within for details.

Locks of Love” can accept nearly any type of hair – permed, colored, layered or ethnic hair included. After all, there are many different types of children in need of different types of wigs. They also accept charitable donations if you aren’t quite ready to take the plunge (or cut!).

For more information about “Locks of Love” you can check out their website. You can also send your donation by simply sending your ponytail to: 2925 10th Avenue North, Suite 102, Lake Worth, FL 33461-3099. Make sure to include your name and address in the package so they can send you a thank you note.

On a personal note, my friends and I have donated to “Locks of Love” many times, including during the high school and college years where your hair and looks are oh-so-important. A hair cut is nothing but a change, and in most cases, a change for the better. I hope you’ll consider donating your hair for this great charity; who knows, you may love your new style, and become frequent donors like we have!
