Long Hair Care Tips for Young Girls

Long hair on a young girl can be so beautiful! But there’s a reason why it’s rare to see long hair on young girls – because it’s a lot of work! In this article I will give you ten tips to help you care for your daughter’s long hair.

Tip #1: Assess your personality types

The number one tool for caring for long hair is patience. If you, or your daughter, do not have the necessary patience to comb through long hair, then I don’t recommend keeping it long. It’s just not worth daily crying fits and battles.

Tip #2: Use a hair and body shampoo

When a girl has long hair, the shampoo she uses will most likely end up in her bath water which could lead to a bladder infection. Therefore, I recommend using a hair and body shampoo such as Paula’s Choice All Over Hair & Body Shampoo. It’s an all-in-one fragrance-free product for all hair types.

Tip #3: Let her hair dry before combing

I found that it was a lot easier to wait until my daughter’s hair was dry before combing it out. Unfortunately this can take a long time. Try to find a good time for your daughter to bathe or shower so you have plenty of time to let it dry naturally.

Tip #4: Use a Detangling Spray

Once her hair is dry, use a detangling spray. My favorite is Suave Kids Detangling Spray in dutch apple scent. It is a tear free spray with a pleasant scent. It also helps to reduce static and flyaways.

Tip #5: Use fingers to comb through hair

Before attempting to run a brush or comb through my daughter’s hair, I always run my fingers through to locate the big tangles. I found it to be a lot less painful and damaging to her hair for me to try to untangle the tangles with my fingers instead of ripping through them with a comb.

Tip #6: Use a boar brush

The best brush to use for long hair is a 100% boar brush. My favorite is a boar brush made by Conair with a rubber handle. The boar brush smoothens out the hair and makes it look so soft. Unfortunately this brush does not get out all of the tangles, so I just had to learn to accept the fact that there would be always be tangles. But the brush makes her hair look like there are no tangles which is why I loved it.

Tip #7: Get really good at doing a braid

I found that a braid was the best way for my daughter to wear her hair. It kept her hair out of her face, looked nice, and it kept her hair from getting tangled during the day.

Tip #8: Sleep with a braid

If your daughter is an active sleeper, chances are her hair will be a tangled mess in the morning. I recommend putting her hair in a loose braid at night.

Tip #9: Keep the ends trimmed

Having long hair is no good if the hair doesn’t look healthy. Therefore, keep the ends of her hair trimmed to prevent split ends.

Tip #10: Repairing split ends

If the ends of your daughter’s hair look damaged, try using a specialty product for repairing split ends. I recommend Avon’s Advance Techniques Damage Repair Split End Mender. You simply distribute a small amount into damp hair and style as usual.

Consider donating to Locks of Love

Recently my daughter decided to donate twelve inches of her hair to Locks of Love. I am very proud of her for giving such a wonderful gift to someone in need. For more information on Locks of Love click here.
