How to Create French Chic Decor

Color Schemes

The French are always on the edge of fashion and design, so it’s no real surprise that they’re always on the cutting edge of home décor. French design is all about sophistication and being as chic as possible. The French are a bold people; they know it and they embrace it. Everything in France is done up in an extravagant manner. Everything from window displays to restaurants to homes, gardens and landscaping – everything has that “wow” factor.

Color Schemes for French Chic

French Chic color schemes are generally pairs of two contrasting but totally made for each other colors. Colors like sky blue and gold are common and they help give your room a tranquil and relaxing space that’s also bright, warm and sunny at the same time.

You can also use brighter oranges and creams with a touch of rust. Throw in a few throw pillows in opposing colors such as pale green or sky blue and again, you’ve got a very French Chic color scheme.

These of course, are just suggestions. There are no set in stone color rules when it comes to decorating in a French Chic style. It’s all about being bold.

Décor Ideas

Embrace the old. French Chic is all about gorgeous antique pieces. Marble and plaster statues look great for this purpose. They can be found at any home decorating store and you can really alter their surfaces to make them fit any décor.

Overstuffed furniture is always chic. It’s comfortable, it’s vibrant and most importantly it’s bold. The French want lots of style, but they also want lots of comfort. When picking out fabrics, try to stick to floral patterns, stripes or gingham and then pair it with solid pillows (or vice versa.)

Gold frames are also a great idea. Ornate or outrageous, you can pick out any style of frame and it will look great. Another great idea is to pick out several different frames, in varying shades of gold (or any other color you choose) and create a photo collage on your wall. This makes a great focal point for the room. Be sure to lay the frames out on the floor so you can make the perfect arrangement before you put them up onto the wall.

Paris is famous for many things, the Arch de Triumph, the Eiffel Tower, fabulous shopping and more. When you’re decorating to give a French Chic appeal, try adding a few things Parisian. You can table lamps or glass bottles shaped like the Eiffel tower. You can also find add artwork that focuses on French fashion or famous French architecture. It’s a great way to express your love for all things French, and it adds to your chic style of décor.

Another great idea is to check out eBay. You can purchase old postcards from other countries (such as France, or postcards that are postmarked to France) and frame them. Place several overlapping each other in a frame to create a unique collage that’s all your own.

When it comes to home design, the French are still cutting edge but they’re still very involved in keeping their homes warm, comfortable and inviting. You can be chic and still be comfortable with your French Chic décor.
