How to Cook Deer Meat

Deer Meat

Being from South Carolina, I enjoy what some people may call “odd” foods. Deer is one of my personal favorites. I would absolutely love to share one of these recipes with you and hope that you will seriously consider trying it other than just brushing it off as cruel to animals or disgusting.

The ever-popular venison has many uses. For some of ya’ll out there, that’s deer. The best way to get a deer is not to buy it. The absolute best way to get deer is to go out and kill it yourself. First, you get the joy of hunting, and then you get the pride of the kill, then finally the joy of eating food that you killed yourself. Once you have killed the deer and told the processor what you want, it is time to wait until you get it back. The first recipe is the easiest one of all. Deer burger actually tastes slightly more “gamey” than hamburger. It is excellent for any use of hamburger meat. Whether you are grilling hamburgers, making tacos, or simply making Hamburger Helper, deer burger will substitute very nicely. Next, deer sausage can actually be cooked just like any other sausage, by browning it in a frying pan or using it in a stew. Next, the ham and shoulder of any deer can be cut into jerky. Simply get a dehydrator and some good jerky seasoning, and you can make your own. Now, the best think about jerky is that it will keep for a very long time. Finally, my personal favorite is the deer steak. This is not like a porterhouse or T-bone, but a cube steak. Now, this steak can be grilled with a little marinade, but my favorite recipe to prepare this involves frying. Break each piece, around 3-5 square inches, with flour, salt, pepper, and a tiny dash of chili powder. Make sure that if you want gravy, you pan-fry the meat. Fry each piece until it is done and you’re ready to make the gravy. You can tell it is done by the inside lacking any red substance and it is very brown, but not too tough.

Next, you can begin preparing some rice. You’re going to need it to put the gravy on, as rice and gravy is one of the best things to ever grace the earth. Now, to make the gravy, you make it exactly the same as other gravy. Rid the pan of all the grease except for barely enough to cover the bottom. Next, stir in around 1-2 tablespoons of flour. Now you can add salt and pepper, and any other herbs you may like in your gravy.

Now that all the courses are done, you can serve it in a variety of ways. Either top the gravy with rice, which is amazing, or use some gravy to top the fried deer meat. Also, you can smother the meat in the pan with the gravy. Any of these ways are good.

As you can see, deer has a variety of food uses. Hopefully you’ll give some of these a try. Go get it done!
