How to Care for Indian Curly Hair

Curl Hair, Curly Hair Products, Hair Straighteners, Hair Type, Tresemme

I know there must be a lot of articles out there regarding curly hair and how to maintain them. But not in many of them you will find anything related to Indian hair type or say Indian curly hair type.

Most of the women in Indian have their hair curly, straight or wavy. Straight hair is manageable, wavy hair can be managed to a certain level but what about curly hair ? If you look at women with curly hair, they have no idea of how to maintain them. Many of them just comb the hair and tie it up or else braid it ruining its natural texture or in
the worst scenario use the magic wand (hair straightener) to magically transform curly hair to straight hair. Which I would say is a direct suicide mission for your hair. After regular and prolonged use of hair straighteners you will find less hair on your head and more split ends.

Even I have curly hair. My hair is black in color and it used to be a little long. But a few years back I got a new hair cut with a blowout done. It was an amazing transformation and I felt so good after seeing my hair become straight, nice and flowy. Many people appreciated my new look. To maintain the new look I had to use a hair
straightener. I used it weekly at least thrice, once after hair wash and twice every other day to keep the hair style. I did this for nearly two years and that was it. My hair took a lot of damage because of my irresponsible behavior. My hair started curling even more and also had a lot of split ends apart from losing a ton of hair from my head.
And thats it I wanted a change. Change for Good.

I went to one of the hair salons to get a hair cut proper for my hair type. I asked the lady over there what kind of hair cut would be good for my hair type ? After taking a close examination of my hair she said that I don’t have much hair on my head, so a two-layered long cuts would be good. The layering was to keep the volume of my hair intact and the long cuts were to keep the curls away from my face. That seemed proper for me because I do not want to use those straighteners again. If at all I am using them then it would be for some special occasion but not always.

Now I had to hunt for the proper hair products that would help my hair regain its lost glory. I searched and searched, read many articles, blogs, researched several products and then finally settled down on a few. I have been using these products for the last two years and already my hair feels and looks SO good.

So now I would like to share with you girls about the products and the routine care that I take to keep my bouncy curls healthy and shining.

1. First of all, stop abusing your hair.

2. Then go to a good parlor where you can discuss about your hair with the hair stylist. They are the best people who can recommend what kind of haircut would suit you. Normally I would recommend you getting a layered cut, if you have lost a lot of hair then go for a short layered cut and if you have some of your lost glory still intact then
go for three layered cut. A layered cut would help in getting a bounce to your hair.

3. Now after the hair cut you will need some hair products to maintain them. I usually use warm coconut oil hair massage every once or twice in a week. This depends on the time of the year. If its summer I would go for twice a week massage and in winter once a week massage.

4. After an hour I wash my hair with Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo for curly hair. This product is very mild and it does not have any kind of harmful chemicals in it thats why they are used for babies.

5. Once the shampooing is done we will need a good conditioner. I normally use a deep conditioner for every alternate head bath. For this I use Garnier Fructis deep conditioner for curly hair. And on the other days I use Tresemme conditioner for curly hair. These conditioners moisturize my hair thoroughly. Starting from the ends slather them on your hair, avoiding the scalp region to prevent dandruff. Take a wide tooth comb and comb your hair while the conditioner is still on your hair. This will distribute the conditioner evenly all through your head. After 5 Min’s rinse your hair with cold water or lukewarm water. Never use hot or warm water for curly hair. This in turn can cause a lot of damage to your hair. Your hair cuticles will be exposed if you take shower in hot water.

6. Next, swirl your hair in a nice hair towel. This will help in removing excess water from your head. Do not rub your hair with the towel, this can cause your hair to become frizzy. After 5 Min’s, remove the towel and part your hair on the front side of your head, you can have a side partition or a front depends on your choice. This is usually done for the next step where you have to put a few more products so that your hair remains hydrated.

7. I use a mixture of Garnier Fructis Anti-Frizz serum and Tresemme’s flawless curls Curl Hydration cream to define my curls. Here I dint use a comb, once I have comber my hair in the shower I dont do it again till my next shower. I take the combo and starting from the ends start applying them thoroughly. I don’t apply a lot because it can wear out my hair and make it look limp. Once this is done, you can just let the hair dry naturally to get the shape of the curls.

8. If you want a few strands to be defined properly then you can apply a little of the hydration cream on the strands and curl them with your fingers. And voila your hair will start looking beautiful, healthy and bouncy.

I have seen many hair stylists showing how they can use a humidifier, curling iron and all other sorts of products to curl your hair. But I bet you that you don’t have to shell your money for all those products and waste your money and time trying to get something which you already have.

I hope this information must have helped you girls a lot. So happy bouncing.
