Best Men’s Cuts for Thinning Hair

Thinning Hair

Men with thin hair are often unsure of which types of haircuts are best for them. As a result, there are lots of men with thinning hair out there who are either sporting baseball caps or even worse, the wrong haircut for their hair type. When a man has thin or fine hair, the best option is to select a cut that is short. Some men mistakenly believe that the cure for thinning hair is to grow it long (I guess to compensate for the hair they no longer have). Unfortunately, this only draws more attention to the thinning areas, and worst of all it can lead a man into performing the dreaded “comb-over”.

For younger men with thinning hair, one of the best cuts is the timeless barbershop classic known as the Caesar cut. This short cut is ideal because all of the hair is styled and worn forward, minimizing the appearance of a receding hairline. Although the length of a Caesar cut is a matter of preference, a classic Caesar will be clipper-cut on the sides and back with a number 2 or 3 clipper guard, and finger-cut on top to about a half-inch in length. The defining characteristic of this cut is the extra length in the front, which can either be styled up or down.

Men who are middle-aged or older tend to look rather childish with a Caesar cut, but the same theory is in effect. These men should also opt for a short clipper cut, but the top should be only slightly longer than the back and sides. This means that the top can be cut short either with scissors or clippers, with a number 3 or 4 clipper guard working best.

The key to making a short cut work is to master the use of styling product. This is true for young men and mature men alike. Avoid gels; they will only make fine hair look even thinner. Use a paste type of product (your salon will have several to choose from), and wear the hair “messy”. This messy look will minimize the appearance of a receding hairline or thin spot on the crown. The ideal styling paste will be creamy to thick in texture, and will leave the hair with a matte (unshiny) finish. Avoid products that add a lot of shine, because not only will they make the hair look shiny, but they will make your scalp look shiny as well, and this is the last thing a man with thinning hair needs.
