Homemade Treatments for Car Sickness

Car Sickness, Car Trips

According to the freedictionary.com, car sickness is “A form of motion sickness caused by travel in a motor vehicle.” But there’s more to it than that. Symptoms of car sickness can include dizziness, lightheadedness and especially, nausea. I know. Because I’m one of those people who suffers from this condition. Fortunately, relief is right at hand when you use these homemade treatments for car sickness.

1. Ginger to the Rescue!
Probably the most effective homemade treatment for car sickness is a natural herb known as “Ginger.” Ginger has found to be as effective for calming upset stomachs as store-bought remedies. You can take ginger in one of three ways: a) You can suck on a piece of spicy ginger candy, b) You can drink a cup of Ginger tea, or you can c) buy this natural herb in capsule form and take it that way. Follow the dosage instructions on the bottle.

2. Eat Protein Before Long Car Trips
Researchers have determined that eating a small meal that contains a lot of protein has positive effects for people who normally suffer from car sickness. Protein foods include lean red meat, cheeses, chicken, fish, turkey, soybeans, baked beans, et cetera.

3. Car Sickness Sufferers: Sit in the Front Seat
Another easy-to-do, homemade treatment for car sickness is to simply sit in the front seat of the vehicle. If you’re not the driver, then be the co-pilot during trips. It’s not clear why riding in the front seat can help alleviate car sickness. Some people think the ride is smoother, while others cite that fact that a person doesn’t see as much being seated up front.

4. Avoid Reading While in a Moving Vehicle
Ask me to read something while we’re tooling down the highway and a wave of car sickness will hit me right away. So, I avoid reading while I’m in a moving vehicle as much as possible. But, sometimes you need to read a map or written directions. To avoid getting lightheaded, dizzy or feeling nauseated, hold the words up close to your eyes so you can’t see the scenery whizzing by you on any side. That can help alot.

5. Get Some Fresh Air While You’re Traveling
Obviously, if you start to feel car sick when the vehicle you’re riding in is whizzing down the interstate at 70 miles-per-hour, you can’t just ask the driver to stop so you can get out. So, the next best thing, which is the next homemade treatment for car sickness, is to get as much fresh air as you can. Open the vents or wind down your window just enough so a good breeze hits you.

6. Mint Is Another Effective Cure
Another homemade treatment for car sickness is to use natural mint. Peppermint, Wintergreen, Spearmint- it doesn’t matter what type of mint you use. Just drink a cup of mint tea before you get in the car, or, suck on some strong mints before and during the trip. Mint is very effective at settling a nauseated stomach and for keeping your tummy from becoming sick in the first place!
