High Heels on Tall Women: Perfect Match

High Heels, Tall Women

To tall women and short women, did you hear about the 6-1 woman who was afraid to enter a convenience store because she had on two and a half inch heels? The nervous tall woman sat in the car for 10 minutes before finally working up the nerve to enter the store. I read about this on a tall women’s web site. Tall women regularly post comments about any issues they have with being tall, and often, the issues are quite negative.

I never knew so many tall women struggled so much with being tall until I stumbled upon this site. The topic of high heels frequently comes up. Many tall women avoid high heels, like it’s a sin to wear them, or like they have no right to indulge in high heels. So I have to ask tall women: Do flats truly make you feel the way many high-heel-loving women say high heels make them feel? Why does any woman wear high heels?

If you ask women of any height why they wear high heels, you’ll usually get the following responses:

They add a finishing touch to a great outfit.

They make me feel sexy.

They make my legs look better.

Every great pair of shoes comes with a high heel.

They make me feel feminine.

And, believe it or not, there are tall women who wear high heels because they get a kick out of the reaction. I’m not tall enough to get any reaction when I wear high heels. At 5-8, I’d be six feet in the heels, and once people look down at my feet to see if my height is real, they see the heels, and that’s that. But if I were a natural six feet, and strutted around in four-inch heels, and people looked down at my feet, they’d still be wowed, because they’d realize, “Gee, without those high heels, that woman’s got to be six feet.”

A very tall woman with high heels looks a lot more confident, self-assured and beautiful than a very tall woman walking around in ballet slippers.

When I see a very tall woman wearing flats, I know why she’s wearing them. I don’t assume it’s because high heels are uncomfortable. I hardly see flats worn by short or medium women, but when I do see flats on a woman, almost always, she’s taller than me.

One tall woman argued that the extra height creates extra weight, and the extra weight that comes with being very tall can make high heels very uncomfortable. But I don’t buy this reasoning for most tall women, because I see a lot of fat medium and short women wearing high heels, and these hefty women clearly weigh more than any lean or even medium built tall women.

It’s not that I encourage high heels in general, because yes, they will damage feet if worn frequently enough. I certainly don’t endorse wearing high heels on the job.

But what about just occasionally when a woman goes out for a few hours, especially if much of the outing involves sitting? Tall women who feel confined to flats (which, admit it, have limitations in terms of style, and look silly with many outfits), need to experience high heels for a change.

Many women do daring things, like scuba dive, sky dive, rock climb, ski fast, etc. For some tall women, wearing high heels is more frightening than sky diving. A very tall body is shaped no different than a medium or short body. In terms of proportions, everything is the same in a very tall woman as in a shorter woman. For example, the length of the arm span from middle finger to middle finger, in the human body, is about the same length as the height of that body, regardless of the height.

The length of the legs, relative to length of torso, falls within the same range, regardless of overall height. The shoulder-width ratio to waist ratio to hip ratio is the same also: falling within the same range, regardless of height. Tall women do not necessarily have “long legs” from a relative standpoint. They may have a 34-inch inseam, but this length goes proportionately with the rest of their body.

I’ve seen short women who were “all legs,” and very tall women with relatively short legs and long torsos. Thus, there is no particular body type or body-segment proportions that typically come with a very tall body. In summary, a tall woman’s body is the same as a shorter woman’s body. So if high heels look good on shorter women, they’ll look just as good on taller women.
