Head Coaches with Most Super Bowl Appearances

Tom Landry

These are the head coaches who took the most teams to the Super Bowl. Nineteen different head coaches have appeared at least twice in the Super Bowl.

Don Shula – 6

Don Shula coached a record 6 teams to the Super Bowl but he only managed to win the big game twice. His first appearance was in 1969 when he took the heavily favored Baltimore Colts into Super Bowl III against the brash Broadway Joe Namath who guaranteed a Jets victory before the game and delivered as the Jets won 16-7. Shula then became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins and lead them into the Super Bowl in 1971 which they lost to Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys 24-3. Shula then had his greatest season in 1972 taking the undefeated Dolphins all the way to the Super Bowl title as they beat the Washington Redskins 14-7. He followed that up with a Super Bowl win over the Minnesota Vikings in 1973 by a score of 24-7. But that was Shula’s last hurrah. He lead the Dolphins back into the Super Bowl in 1982 ans 1984 but they lost both games. Finished his career with a 318-165-6 record (.678).

Tom Landry – 5

Tom Landry and his hat made it to five Super Bowls in his illustrious career and won the big game twice in 1972 vs the Dolphins and 1978 vs the Denver Broncos. He lost the game 3 times. Once to the Colts in 1971 and twice to Chuck Noll and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976 and 1979. All three losses were by 4 points or less. Finished his career with a 270-178-6 record (.603).

Coaches with 4 Appearances

Bud Grant – 0-4 in the Super Bowl as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. Grant did win 4 Grey Cups as champion of the Canadian Football League when he was head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers prior to his run as Vikings head coach.

Chuck Noll – 4-0 as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s won the most Super Bowls to date but his record is somewhat diminished every time another story comes out about how all his great Steeler teams were full of steroids users and abusers.

Joe Gibbs – 3-1 in the Super Bowl all with the Washington Redskins.

Marv Levy – 0-4 with the Buffalo Bills but he did take the Bills to 4 consecutive Super Bowls and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2001.

Dan Reeves – 0-4 including 3 losses with the Bronocos and once with the Atlanta Falcons.

Bill Belichick – 3-1 all with the New England Patriots. Lost Super Bowl XLII and his undefeated season to a miracle play when on 3rd down with 1:15 seconds left in the game and the Patriots leading by 4 points Eli Manning of the New York Giants somehow avoided a sure sack and then threw a miracle 32 yard completion which David Tyree caught on top of his helmet and managed to hold on as he was tackled with the ball pinned against his helmet. Manning then hit Plaxico Burress in the end zone with the winning score with just 35 seconds left in the game.
