Mardi Gras is celebrated at different times according to where you live. Most people refer to it as “Fat Tuesday.” The day to let loose and party before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of lent. There’s no reason this has to be a day of only drinking to excess and being crazy. You can have tons of fun at home with your family and children. Below are some recipes your children will be sure to enjoy as you can too! There is a meaning to the colors used during Mardi Gras. Purple stands for justice. Green stands for faith. Gold stands for power.

Mardi Gras Drinks: Kiwi-Mint Julep – Green = Faith

This recipe is only for two servings, so you can multiply the recipe in accordance to what you need. Children will love the minty taste, and the colorful green will be fun for them.

Ingredients you will need:

3 Tablespoons of sugar
1/2 cup of hot water
2 cups ice
3 kiwis, peeled
2 tablespoons frozen limeade
2 tablespoons. chopped mint

How to prepare:

In a measuring cup (one cup) dissolve the sugar in the hot water. Let it sit for about five minutes to cool. Now in a blender, combine all ingredients including the sugar mixture and blend until smooth. Serve in fun “drink” cups that are plastic for safety of he kids. These can be purchased at any party supply store. You can top with a slice of Kiwi and a sprig of mint, and don’t forget a fun fancy straw.

Mardi Gras Drink Recipe: Fizzy Lemonade – Gold = Power

This is a very simple drink to make. Most kids like lemonade, so it is sure to be a hit. This recipe is for one drink, so plan accordingly.

Ingredients you will need:

Juice of One Lemon
2 tsp. Powdered Sugar
Lemon Slice
Sparkling Water
Lime Slice
Ice

How to prepare:

Mix together the lemon juice and sugar. Stir well to dissolve the sugar. Add the sparkling water and ice. Put a slice of lemon on one side and a slice of lime on the other.

New Orleans Drink: Dixieland Drink – Purple = Justice

This is typically made with alcohol, but it tastes even better without it. This way it is appropriate for the children and others who do not want to fuzz up their heads with vodka.

Ingredients you will need:

dash Sugar
Ice
Juice of Pineapple
16 oz. Banana Juice
2 tbs. Cranberry juice

How to prepare:

Mix the cranberry juice and pineapple juice together very well. Add the banana to the mixture and shake vigorously for three minutes. Pour into glasses and add ice. Put a dash of sugar on each glass.

Mardi Gras Drink Recipe: Hurricane Punch

One of the more popular Mardi Gras drink is the Hurricane. This is a recipe for a non-alcoholic Hurricane punch the kids can enjoy.

Ingredients you will need:

46 oz pineapple juice .
12 oz frozen limeade concentrate, thawed .
6 oz lemonade concentrate, thawed .
2 medium navel oranges, thinly sliced .
46 oz ginger ale, chilled .
6 oz orange juice concentrate, thawed .
16 oz water

How to prepare:

Combine all ingredients except the ginger ale and fruit slices. Put in the refrigerator to chill. When you are ready to serve, add the ginger ale and fruit slices so they float on top. Now all that’s left is to enjoy!

Mardi Gras Drink Recipe: Virgin Hurricane

Since the Hurricane is such a Mardi Gras favorite, I decided to also include a recipe for the actual drink, minus the alcohol. Now your children and others can enjoy either the punch or the drink. Perhaps even both!

Ingredients you will need:

3 oz orange juice
3 oz pineapple juice
1 oz sweet-and-sour mix
1/2 oz grenadine
Pineapple slices
Orange slices

How to prepare:

In a tall glass, pour all juices over ice. Add the grenadine on top. Do not stir. Add the fruit slices as a garnish and top with a bright umbrella and straw.
