Haunted Places in Kanawha County, West Virginia

Haunted Locations, Welch's, WV

West Virginia is a beautiful state known for its mountains, but a lot of people don’t realize that its also known for a large spectrum of haunted locations, and I am just going to touch on Kanawha county. Kanawha county WV is home to the state capitol in Charleston, and also to a number of haunted sites.

Alum Creek- The alum creek cemetery sits behind the Alum Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Several people have witnessed an elderly gentleman wandering aimlessly seemingly confused. When approached he disappears.

Belle – The Hale House is a historical site located near Cabin Creek, WV. A married couple lived in the house with his uncle, The husband was abusive and was murdered one night. After an investigation no one was charged, the man is still seen roaming the grounds seeking justice.

Charleston – Capitol Plaza Theater. The theater was built in 1909, it was built on the site of the Welch Mansion which was built in 1798. The theater has a wide variety of artists that perform there still today. The most seen ghost here is that of John Welch. He is known to be sneaky and likes to scare people. Another ghost is Molly Welch the youngest daughter of John, she is seen less that John, she is said to be shy and you can spot her sometimes sitting in the balcony.

Charleston – The state capitol building, many sightings of a woman and a maintenance man who died of a heart attack. A lot of employee’s have reported seeing them.

Charleston – Sunrise mansion and carriage trail. This was built by Gov. MacCorkle in the 1800’s it sits on a hill that overlooks the city of Charleston. Gov. MacCorkle’s ghost has been seen by numerous people and employees in and around the museum. Also the graves of two unidentified women are there as well, the young women were found murdered on the grounds, and are said to still be seeking revenge to this day.

Charleston- The university of Charleston has numerous buildings that report paranormal activity. Geary S.U. Reports of feeling strange presences, strange noises, voices and shadows have been reported by students and staff alike. Riggleman Hall is known for seeing the ghost of a young girl who committed suicide after discovering she was pregnant.

Charleston – Office building 205 capitol St. was the Woolworth’s five and dime. There was a horrible fire in March of 1949 and seven firefighters were killed. It is said that you can still see some of the firefighters walking the halls of the building.

South Charleston- Thomas Memorial Hospital, This is a very strange story indeed Staff and patients at the hospital report seeing a mysterious blue light that seems to radiate the hallways immediately following a patients death.

These are just a few of the haunted sites in the state of WV and if you are ever visiting Kanawha County, WV make sure to stop bye and you might just see a ghost!
