Haunted Cemeteries and Graveyards in Indiana

Graveyards, Haunted Cemeteries, Locust Grove

Indiana has dozens of haunted cemeteries, and while there isn’t enough room to describe them all here, we can look at some of them.

Start with the Circle Hill Cemetery in Angola. Hundreds of people have teen tall shadowy figures in hooded robes wandering through the cemetery late at night. In Batesville visit the St. Louis Cemetery. Locals supposedly buried a Native American woman alive when they thought she was a witch. Her headstone has iron bars on it and she now haunts the cemetery.

Brazil is home to the infamous 100 Step Cemetery. The legend claims that if you walk up the cemetery stairs and count all 100 steps as you go, you’ll see the ghost of the very first undertaker used there. This man will supposedly show you a vision of your own death. If you count the steps once again you’ll die the way you foresaw. Otherwise someone will push you down the steps to your own death. Others claim that the steps change and when you count going down, there will be less steps than you counted on the way up.

Centerville’s Chapel Road Cemetery has an odd haunting. People claim to feel the temperature drop and hear a dog crying in pain. There are also stories of handprints appearing on the doors and windows of cars.

The Gypsy Graveyard in Crown Point was named for several gypsies that were buried there in the early 1800’s. There are stories of people being raped or murdered in the cemetery, even recently and some claim there are ghostly figures that emerge from the back part.

Fort Wayne’s Crossroads Cemetery is where people report seeing lights moving around and feeling someone watching them. There are also odd noises heard inside the cemetery and when standing just outside the cemetery. Fort Wayne also has two other haunted cemeteries: Devils Hollow and Greenlawn. Local legend claims that if you stay too long in Devils Hollow, you’ll instantly die. Orbs and ghostly shadows are seen at the Greenlawn Cemetery.

Francesville has the haunted Smith Graveyard. A man was walking across the road here when he was unexpectedly killed. His girlfriend standing on the other side of the road was also killed. People sometimes see the man’s ghost preparing to walk across the street.

At the McNaughton Family Cemetery on Ray Road in Freemont you can feel as if you’re walking on air, literally. There are stories of people floating off the ground, feeling cold chills, and feeling someone touch them.

In Greencastle, visit the very haunted Boone Hutch Cemetery. Locals sometimes see the ghost of a police officer inside the graveyard. Others have seen dark shadowy figures inside the cemetery and still others claim they were chased out by large black dogs with bright red eyes.

In Hancock both the Wilkinson-McCready Cemetery and the Thomas Road Cemetery are haunted. Visitors claim to see the boulders on the path move, hear noises coming from the woods, and see blood spots on certain headstones. The Hedley Cemetery is where people tend to feel a heaviness and hear strange sounds.

The nearby Mt. Zion Cemetery is haunted by a woman who died in a car accident. Those who have seen her claim that she has a greenish glow to her. In a cemetery in Hobart there are sounds of a baby crying often heard, though the area is empty.

Indianapolis is where you’ll find the haunted Paul Ruster Park Cemetery. A young boy who is buried there is sometimes seen walking down the road and others have heard him playing the harmonica. The cemetery in Jerome has strange noises and some odd figures inside. Some claim to see a man with a black cape walking between two black dogs.

The Kewana and Fulton Cemetery is plagued by stories of numerous murders and deaths occurring there over the years. Supposedly one tombstone was destroyed by a group of teenagers and the man buried there now keeps an eye over the cemetery. The cemetery new Dewart Lake is also rumored to be haunted.

Belle Guinness was a mass murderer who struck Indiana during the 1800’s and many of her victims are buried in the Patten Cemetery. The cemetery is also the last resting spot of a local murderer. Rumor claims that the man and those victims are sometimes seen and that if you damage his headstone he’ll come out.

At the Posey Cemetery you can see orbs, a red light, and even red eyes in the woods. There are also stories of a woman softly singing and being accompanied by a man on the guitar. Supposedly a local preacher hung himself there years ago.

Lafayette has the haunted Harrison Cemetery. Visitors claim to have things thrown at them, or feel someone touch them. There are also stories of someone following them through the area and some people hear the sounds of someone crying and moaning. You can also visit the Greendale Cemetery in Lawrenceburg. There are stories of strange figures seen there, cold spots and someone watching you.

In Logansport the haunted cemetery is Mount Hope where people hear the sounds of horses stomping. Over in Lowell the Lake Prairie Cemetery is home to ghostly figures and some bright orbs. In the haunted Main Street Graveyard in Markleville you’ll see a number of ghostly figures walking around.

New Albany has a former hanging tree in their St. Joe Road Cemetery. The tree supposedly changes shape and appearance at night.

At the Jackson Cemetery in New Paris, people claim to see ghostly figures and a light mist that rolls along the ground. North Judson’s Highland Cemetery is haunted by something or someone that grabs at them and scratches their car.

The Hookmans Cemetery in Peru got its name from the old urban legend about a man with a hook for a hand. Supposedly this man stalks the road next to the cemetery. There are also cold spots and a dense fog that seems to settle over the area. The nearby Lutheran Cemetery is where a big white cross sits and some claim they’ve seen stairs coming down from the cross late at night.

In Pike County there’s the haunted Blackfoot Cemetery. Supposedly a witch was buried there and you’ll find her grave away from the other headstones. There are also stories of strange noises and weird lights seen moving around inside.

Poland’s Zion Church Cemetery is haunted by a ghost that runs out in front of passing cars, as if to stop them from entering the graveyard.

The haunted Goshen Cemetery in Richmond has several ghosts. One is a ghostly woman in white who watches over one grave in particular. There are also reports of footsteps, shadows, and orbs experienced there. Rockville’s Crying Baby Cemetery is another scary place to visit in Indiana. Supposedly you can hear a woman screaming and crying, then hear her baby crying in response.

Salem’s Henderson Cemetery is where rumor claims a cult massacred three teenage girls there during the 1970’s. There are stories of people seeing a man in a dark robe and hearing things move, as well as feel someone watching them. In the San Pierre Cemetery there are reports of people walking around inside the cemetery.

Stop by the Bridge Water Cemetery in Scottsburg to experience some strange and unusual things. There are stories of a creature with glowing red eyes and shadowy figures. Some claim to see a white horse as well. There are also stories of car problems, cold spots, and handprints appearing on the car.

The graveyard on Primrose Road and Adams Street in South Bend has a strange mist that seems to hang low to the ground and a mist that appears in photographs but wasn’t there at the time.

Tab’s Locust Grove Cemetery is supposedly haunted by the ghost of men who fought at the Battle of Tippecanoe. People hear men marching, horses running, and soldiers talking. The ghost of a man and his dog Stiffy are sometimes spotted at the Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.

In Warren you’ll find the thirteen graves at the Batson cemetery. These graves are unmarked and history cannot remember who is buried there. Supposedly one of the graves disappears at night. Actually though the city has proven that these “graves” are actually the remnants of an old walkway/sidewalk that ran once ran through the cemetery. There are also stories of a glowing headstone, and the ghost of a man in torn clothing.

Like I said, there are dozens of haunted cemeteries in Indiana.
