Great Preschool Lesson Plan Ideas for Springtime

Lesson Plan Ideas, Party Game Ideas, Poetry Writing

Don’t let spring go by without taking the opportunity to teach your preschoolers about of all the seasonal changes that are taking place around them. With that said, here are a few lesson plan ideas to help you get started:

Language Arts

When it comes to language arts related activities, there are several handouts that I like to use. A few of them are posted on the Enchanted Learning website. Ones that I would recommend are “Spring Words Mini Book”, “Spring Cut-and-Paste Dictionary” and “Spring I See…Book.” They will help the children become familiar with such words as “robin”, “showers”, “frog” and “bunny.”

When they are done completing the books, you could have them write acrostic or cinaquin poems using the words listed in the cut-and-paste dictionary. I should also mention that there is a “Signs of Spring” worksheet posted on The Teachers Guide website that you could use to help them prepare for the poetry writing exercise or as part of a discussion about the five senses.

Math and Sequencing

Want to factor a bit of math into you lesson plan too? The Enchanting Learning website also has a “Spring Counting Book” that would fit in well with a lesson plan. The book contains worksheets that will help the children practice counting from one to 10. The pages also contain sections that could be colored in afterward.

Another option would be to have the children count sunflower seeds or sort plastic Easter eggs by color. There is also a set of spring dominoes posted on the Busy Bee website that could be part of a sequencing activity. Pictures on the dominos include flowers, packets of seeds, umbrellas and kids gardening.

Science

There are a lot of fun science experiments that may be incorporated into a spring theme too. Some of my favorites are posted on the Jump Start website. The site lists four experiments that utilize eggs, one of which could also be used with a dental hygiene lesson plan. If you don’t want to mess around with eggs, you could always plant sunflower seeds inside see-through plastic cups instead.

Arts and Crafts

Another option would be to engage the kids into a few spring themed arts and crafts. Personally, I am fond of the paper plate flower mask craft posted on the DLTK website. It will leave your classroom looking like one big human flower garden. Best of all, the finished masks may be used for dramatic play, parading around the room or incorporated into an action rhyme.

Want more? There is also a flower worksheet posted on the Kid Zone WS website that you could use for a coloring activity. It is designed to help the children recognize certain colors like red and yellow.
