Preschool / Toddler Crafts for Letter H Lesson Plans

Hand Print, Hand Prints, Lesson Plan Ideas, Toddler Crafts

Are you preparing a preschool lesson plan on the letter H? Are you searching for crafts that begin with the letter H? Are you a home school mom needing alphabet activities? Below are a few lesson plan ideas. These are great for preschool, kindergarten and child care classes.

Hand Print Art

One cute and memorable craft is hand print art. Your students will make hand prints that will be transformed into objects such as butterflies or flowers. Older children can create the animals themselves, while toddlers will need assistance.

One very common idea is to make a hand print turkey. Children can trace their hands. The thumb becomes the head, and the rest, are the feathers. For hand print flowers, the prints are the flower buds. The students can add stems and leaves. For more suggestions, read “Handprint Art and Craft Ideas for Kids.

In lieu of creating hand print animals, you can just have each child make a collage of their hand prints. This is messy, but fun. Write, “H is for hand” at the bottom of each masterpiece.

Heart Magnet

A second idea is to paint and decorate heart magnets. You can make hearts beforehand using plaster of paris. (Heart molds can be found at most craft stores.) Alternately, you can purchase wooden hearts. You can also create then with card stock.

Encourage the students to paint and decorate the hearts. For best results, use glitter and pom-poms. Glue a magnet on the back. This makes a great gift around Valentine’s Day.

House Mosaic

Mosaic crafts can help children improve fine motor skills. Cut up small pieces of construction paper beforehand. Use several different colors such as black, brown, white, green, gray, and red. Show the children a picture of a sample mosaic and encourage them to make one of a house. The green can be the grass, brown can be the roof, etc. This is best for ages five and up.

Hand Puppet

Most kids will be entertained with hand puppets. The best way to make these is using socks. Encourage the children to glue eyes on the sock. They can then use a marker to create the mouth and nose. Yarn can be used for hair. If you need a less-expensive option, the kids can make them using paper sacks.

Horn

A horn craft is unique and memorable. The easiest way to make this requires a paper towel roll, wax paper, rubber band and a pencil. Wrap the wax paper around one side of the roll. Use the rubber band to keep it in place. Punch holes in the roll with the pencil. The children will need to sing (or yell) into the “horn” for it to work.

Horse or Hippo Magnet

A simple idea is to have the children color or paint small pictures of horses or hippos. (Print off hippo or horse coloring pages online.) Copy them onto card stock paper, and shrink if necessary. After the children have finished coloring them, stick a magnet on the back.

Honeycomb Collage

This simple activity involves honeycomb cereal, glue sticks and paper. Have the children create designs with the honeycombs on construction paper. Or, encourage them to make the letter H using the honeycombs.

Letter H Magnet

A magnet in the shape of the letter H is always a good idea. You can create your own using card stock, or buy wooden ones from a craft store. The children can decorate them using stickers, glitter, markers and more.
