Gifts from the Heart: Homemade Father’s Day Gifts

homemade father's day gifts, Homemade Snacks, Shoe Polish

Father’s Day is quickly approaching and it’s never too early to get started on homemade gifts for Dad. These presents are always well accepted and there is not a father alive whose heart has not melted over a slightly cock-eyed clay pot or less that level tie hangar. It could be the most rickety item and Dad will love it simply because it was made by the hands of his little one.

Homemade Father’s Day gifts do not have to complicated or difficult to make. The simplest of items – like a homemade air freshener made from construction paper (see below) – is greatly appreciated by Dad. Older children can be set down with the directions and make the gift themselves while younger ones will need a little help from Mom. All in all, though, the experience and the appreciating look and following affection from Dad are the best ‘Thank You’ of all.

Here are a few Father’s Day’s gift ideas to get you and your children started early. All of the items used in these craft’s can be purchased at your local craft store or craft department in stores such as K-Mart or Wal-Mart. You may even have some of them in your home.

Dad’s Munchies Can

Take the largest coffee cans that you can find and paint them. The metal cans work best for this if you find them. Prime the cans first and then paint them white. Once they are dried, have your children put the handprints on the can and write ‘Happy Father’s Day’ with the year on the side. Line the inside of the can with wax paper and fill the can with homemade snacks such as chocolate covered pretzels, caramel corn, cookies or Chex Mix. Decorate the lid so the snacks inside do not go stale.

Dad’s Own Air Freshener

Take a few pictures of your children and print them on photo paper. Cut two circles out of construction paper and then paste the picture on the circle leaving a border. In the border, using silver or gold Sharpie pens, write ‘You make my world go around. Happy Father’s Day’. Have your children paint the other circle using water colors or tempura paints. Take the air freshener that you bought and cut it up to fit inside the circles and then glue the circles to them, or glue the circles together and spray them with air freshener. Finish off with a hole in the top and some yarn to hang it with.

Dad’s ‘Faux Leather’ Pencil Holder

Take a clean jar that’s a good size or even on that’s an odd shape and see if a pencil or pen will fit in it. Make sure it is free of dirt and cracks. Using masking tape, rip the tape into small pieces and completely cover the jar with it. Put the pieces all over the place so that there is a pattern to it, but make sure they all overlap until the jar is completely covered. Wipe brown paste shoe polish all over the jar and tape using an old rage. Rub it in well and let dry. Repeat with more shoe polish until you the desired color. You will notice that it now looks like leather and it is ready to hold Dad’s pencils and pens.
