Giant Flower Garden Wedding or Party Backdrop

Spanish Moss

Look no further! You’ve finally found what you can use as the backdrop for your wedding or other celebration. A giant flower garden is the perfect place where a person can stand to have gorgeous pictures taken for any special occasion. It does take a good bit of time to make the garden but it doesn’t take a lot of cash. The finished look is spectacular; set the garden up against a wall for a party at home, or make it into a semi-circle at a church wedding. When you get the pictures back, you’ll be amazed at how lovely everyone looks among the flowers.

One type of flower you can make is done when you stack several layers of tissue paper on top of each other. Do a fan-fold, from one end to the other, and then tie a string tightly around the middle. Wrap the ends of two pipe cleaners together, and wrap them around the string. The pipe cleaners will be used to attach the flower to a stalk, later. Begin separating each layer of tissue paper to create the flower. Create different looks by cutting the ends into a rounded or a pointed shape, or by using pinking shears to cut the ends. Stack papers of all the same color or blend two or more colors in the fan-fold.

Another giant flower you can make is done by cutting the same petal shape, in various sizes. Gather some of the small shapes and form them into a bouquet. Wrap tape around the base to secure it. Continue adding more petals to the bouquet, taping each one at the bottom, until the flower grows to the size you want. Give a cute accent to the center by wadding up tissue paper of a different color, smashing it flat, and gluing it to the middle of the flower. Spread some glue on top of it and attach Spanish moss. Or, sprinkle glitter, seed beads, or rhinestones, over the middle of the flower.

One way to make a stalk for each flower is to pour cement or concrete into a disposable plastic cup. Or, just fill a cup up with gravel or heavy rocks. Cut a long piece of easy-to-roll screen, and form it into a long tube. Continue wrapping the screen into the tube shape, so that you end up with a cylinder with several layers. Place the tube around the cup and secure it with tape. The best tube is one that fits the cup perfectly, but tapers off towards the top. Wrap green tissue paper, or green duct tape, around and around the cup, as well as the whole length of the screen tube.

Cut large leaf shapes and put two together, with a wire trapped between them. The wire will help secure the leaf to the stalk. Wrap the stalk once, and as you wrap it a second time, position a leaf, here and there, and secure each one to the stalk with the tissue or tape wrapping. Use the attached pipe cleaners to affix a flower on each stalk.

If the floor of the garden will show in the pictures, Spanish moss makes a nice floor covering. Or, use raffia as the garden ground. The giant flower garden is perfect for a wedding, an anniversary party, a Sweet 16 celebration, or a spring get-together.
