General Mills Golden Grahams: More Than Just a Breakfast Cereal!

General Mills, Mores, s'mores

Jerry Seinfeld isn’t the only person that thinks cereal can be eaten at any time of the day or night. I have a lot of favorites but Golden Grahams, Count Chocula and Cookie Crisp rank at the top of the list. Out of the three, Golden Grahams is the most nutritious and can be used to make a quick batch of faux S’mores!

Once a month my local grocery store puts most of the General Mills cereals on sale; six boxes for ten dollars and they will accept coupons on them so I end up getting them for about a dollar a box. That is a complete steal when you check out the regular prices on cereal. Call me cheap but there’s no way I am paying four or five dollars for a box of cereal; the exception would be Crackin’ Oat Bran.

A 3/4 cup serving of Golden Grahams has 120 calories (160 with a half cup of milk), 26 grams of carbohydrates (11 from sugar), 2 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat. Sure, it might be considered high in carbohydrates but you have to remember that only 11 of them are from sugar. I usually divide the cereal up into bags and put them back in the box; this way if I want a snack I’m not tempted to sit there grabbing handfuls out of the box.

The taste of the cereal is sweet; that’s partly due to the honey coating on it. Even when eaten with milk it still retains the crunch. It takes about ten minutes for it to get soggy; that’s pretty impressive when compared to other breakfast cereals. Is this nutritious for kids? It does have a lot of vitamins and minerals in it and it is made from whole grains; the downside is the amount of sugar. If they are having the recommended amount then chances are they won’t be bouncing off the walls but I don’t see many parents measuring out cereal in the morning.

You can use these instead of graham crackers to make S’mores; arrange the cereal on a microwave plate and add some mini marshmallows to it. Microwave it for about thirty seconds then add bits of chocolate to the top. You can also melt the chocolate and pour it over the mix. Another fun thing to do is to add all the ingredients to a bowl and microwave it then stir it slowly so you don’t break up the cereal. Spoon it on to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and you have a very quick treat.

General Mills also participates in the Boxtops For Education program. Cut out official coupon on the box and send it to school with your child; each coupon is worth ten cents for the school to spend on a variety of supplies. This is one of the many ways that General Mills gives back to the community. They also have a kid friendly site that promotes good eating habits and has fun games; you can check that out at www.millsberry.com
