Summer is here and more people want to go out and enjoy the sun. However, people have also become more attentive to what they are spending these days. They want to have entertainment that is cost effective, yet still fun. I have been confronted with this same dilemma as summer begins to start. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, so a few weekends ago I started searching for places to go and have fun that were local or within reasonable driving distance. During my search, I came upon an amusement park called Frontier City. It is known to be the oldest and largest theme park in Oklahoma. Frontier City is located in the northeastern part of Oklahoma City, on 11501 NE Expressway, right off the exit from Interstate 35. This area of Oklahoma City is only about one hour and fifteen minutes from Tulsa, so it is reasonable driving distance for me. My boyfriend and I decided to try it out. That weekend we looked for coupons to Frontier City in local Oklahoma magazine and tourist websites. The best discount we found was $19.99 one day admission per person. To purchase a one person, one day admission online is regularly $28.99, but Frontier City also offers discounted season pass prices. Since Frontier City is mostly only open on the weekends, from May through October, we decided to go on a Saturday. We got there at about ten in the morning.
When my boyfriend and I entered the park, I could not help thinking how rustic and how fun the park was designed. Frontier City is made to look like an old large Wild West town from the 1880’s. The dining areas, theaters, rides, shops, game venues, and live shows are all also named after old Western themes. There are at least thirty rides in the park. Seven are them are high speed, thriller roller coasters, six of them made especially for children, and the remainder of the rides are for the whole family. Some of my favorite rides are the Quick Draw, the Mystery River Log Flume, the Grand Centennial Ferris Wheel, and the Renegade Rapids. There are also several eating places, souvenir shops, and areas to play games to win prizes. There are three large areas where visitors can play various games to win stuffed animals and other toys. Games range from $3- $5 to play, and some are guaranteed to let you win something. Other attractions offered at Frontier City are their live performances. Some of the performances this summer season included “Survivor Live” (based on the popular television show), “Bob the Builder” for the kids, the Wild West Gun show, and the Superstar Concert Series that includes acts from famous local and nationwide entertainers.
We left the park later in the evening. I could not help but think that during the whole day we were at Frontier City, we had a lot of fun and did not spend a lot of money. If you live in either the Tulsa or Oklahoma City vicinity, this amusement park is such a great place to spend the day with your friends or family.
