Free Things to Do in Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers, Fort Myers Florida

If you are longing for a vacation in the Sunshine State, you should consider Fort Myers, Florida. Why? It is an exciting and inexpensive place to visit. Once there you’ll find every type of restaurant possible in every price range. But don’t worry, you can afford a nice meal here and there because there are so many free things to do, you won’t mind spending the money on food.

First and foremost, there is the beach and it is not just a beach. It is a cool place to hang out. There is a lovely big pier that you can fish off of as well as a gift shop on the pier. The entire area where the beach is located is very tourist friendly. You can walk for blocks and check out shop after shop. All in all it’s a very nice day.

As the sun sets, you can walk down to a quiet part of the beach and watch dolphins swim and play. For some reason there really seem to be a lot of dolphins in the area.

When you’ve had enough sun you can get in your car and simply drive around the residential areas on the water. You will see some of the most amazing homes. And speaking of homes, when the real estate was booming builders everywhere in Fort Myers were building model homes and trust me, most of them were amazing. You can simply drive around and go into these awesome Florida homes and have some great fantasies.

If you are a shopper and you enjoy flea markets, well you just went to heaven in Fort Myers. There is a huge flea market on Ortiz. Wear good shoes, park your car and go in and have fun. Don’t worry if the temperature is really hot. No, they don’t have air conditioning but they have fans all along the walkways that blow mist at you and believe it or not, it is very comfortable.

Once inside you are going to find just about anything you can think of. And, don’t be surprised, but you will probably get lost inside. They actually have aisles named like streets and sections are colors, but as many times as I’ve been there, I think I’ve gotten lost every time. The flea market is definitely one of my favorite places.

Finally, no visit to Fort Myers is complete without a visit to the Shell Factory. It is on the edge of town on State Rt. 41 the main north and south passage. You can’t miss it, as it is a large building with huge signs. You will love this place. Go in and take your time perusing all their shell and beach related products. There are great souvenirs here and the prices on most of the things are quite reasonable. Go out back and you can relax in their yard. Many times they have a band playing. You could easily spend a couple of hours there.

So, if you are on a budget, but dying to go south, Fort Myers is a great choice!
