Free Crochet Patterns: Women’s Scarfs

When the weather starts to turn nippy I always think I want a new scarf! Whether you need one in a new color to match a new winter coat, a new fun style, one to give as a gift to a friend, or donate to the homeless. Here are some simple designs you can use to get started.

This fancy women’s scarf called Fantail scarf is perfect for adding a little visual interest through texture and pattern instead of the colors used. Unlike most scarf patterns this creative design is narrow in the middle and fans out to the ends. The pattern designer Ann Regis made it to be less bulky around the neck. While listed as an easy pattern it is more intermediate as there are some challenging stitches/pieces to the pattern.

Double Ewe Yarn has a variety of great patterns that are free. My favorite design is called Ambrosia as it is a nice simple pattern that has a unique design to the ends of the scarf. These little details are how I manage not to lose my scarf and are often the best conversation starters. This one also makes a great gift.

This more complicated Aqua Blue Scarf is for the more talented crochet artist. I am not talented enough to pull it off but the free pattern is worth mentioning here.

This Scarf varies in texture as well as color and is surprisingly warm. It is a simple pattern done with only one ball of yarn. Called Spectrum Scarf, the pattern is very easy and it is a fun for young women/teens also.

This beautiful circular patterned scarf titled Hope Scarf is much more challenging it is done in a series of circles and half circles with a fringe trim to add length. Although the pattern calls for pink yarn to be used it makes a striking picture done in alternating black and purple. If you are new to crochet you may need a little assistance mastering this style, but the pattern becomes more understandable with practice.

When considering a texture to your crochet project this Wave Pattern is a beautiful look. I must admit that the pattern is very intimidating. I found it difficult to follow and have not managed to create a scarf that did not need to be taken back out. So while pretty it is perhaps not so easy.

This soft Rippled scarf has a matching hat pattern and a short fringe on it. I have not tried it but have used similar patterns and like the look of the finished pattern.

Ok so I must say this is my favorite scarf in this article. I think the designer was working overtime when they came up with this. It is simple, listed as a beginner pattern, yet it looks very fun and always gets comments from friends. It is called Crochet-and-Braid which is exactly what you will be doing. Using the correct types of yarn even in different colors or brands is important to get the correct visual effect.

Using the same Sashay product this scarf can be made for a decorative addition to your outfit in summer or spring, but it is not a scarf for warmth. It can be created quickly and is often welcomed as a gift. The design is like a continuing cascade of lacy ruffles, or Frills.

This Scarf varies in texture as well as color and is surprisingly warm. It is a simple pattern done with only one ball of yarn. Called Spectrum Scarf, the pattern is very easy and it is a fun for young women/teens also.

This pattern of detailed and varying stitches gives much to look at. While it appeared difficult at first it turned out to be a more easily done pattern than some. You must be able to focus your energy on repeating the pattern as directed and it is not a pattern easy enough to do in front of the TV. It is called Sophisticated and can be found Here

The Infinity scarf is another design that was very creatively done. It is a circle that is large enough to be draped around the neck 2-3 times or can be used to cover the head and go around the neck. It is shown in a pale blue but also looks stunning in dark jewel tones as well. It is a mid level pattern.

The Easy Wrap Comfort Scarf is a design by the Double Stitch Twins with a more open weave and long trailing tassels. The pattern is easy to follow and after the first couple of stitches on each of the long rows it is easy to catch the feel and fall into a rhythm of hooking. This pattern is created going the long ways completing the length of the scarf before adding the additional 7 rows to give it the 5-5.5 inch width you will finish with. I found these types of patterns easier to complete as a beginner. The almost 11 inch fringe is fun and fanciful and can be added in a complimentary color if desired.
