Fast Growing Shrubs and Bushes

Azaleas, Fast Growing Trees, Gardenias, Growing Trees

All fast growing shrubs are not created equal. There is a large variety of fast growing shrubs to be obtained either through online or local nurseries; however not all shrubs will do well in your backyard. Before bringing home a fast growing shrub, bush or even trees, consider placement as well as soil conditions and seasonal climates. A bit of extra time now will go far in assuring the best fast growing shrub or bush for your landscaping needs. Ask advice at your local nursery or garden centers or a neighbor whose yard you admire.

Fast growing shrubs or bushes require the most attention during their first season. Water is the number one key to helping your fast growing bushes to become established as soon as possible. Once your fast growing shrubs are planted and watered in, apply a thick layer of mulch underneath them to conserve moisture. Most shrubs and bushes do well with light feedings of fertilizer beginning as soon as new growth is noted on the tips of branches and stems.

Fast growing shrubs are available in a variety of size ranges. Some may need regular trimming while others such a azaleas look great if allowed to follow a natural shape. Ask questions and read any information available to make sure the fast growing shrub is the size appropriate for your space and plans.

Some of my favorite fast growing bushes that do well in a wide range of areas include:

Azaleas: Azaleas come in a wide range of sizes and colors. They can be planted anytime of year, however in areas with extreme winters, planting no later than early fall will allow the roots to develop prior to harsh weather. Azaleas need an acid soil to bloom best; the area should receive a couple hours of direct sun, but then partial shade during the hottest daylight hours.

Gardenias: Gardenias are another fast growing shrub that can be kept trimmed to the area and has white fragrant blossoms and evergreen leaves in some parts of the country. Gardenias are easy to grow and propagate from cuttings. They are also heat and drought tolerant once well established.

Holly Bushes & Boxhedges are traditional fast growing shrubs that have evergreen foliage and require minimal upkeep once established. These general require regular trimming to maintain the desired shape and height.

Roses: Rose bushes are also a favored fast growing bush. However not all roses do well in all soil. Check with a local nursery or garden center for varieties they recommend. There are shrub roses that are more tolerate of soil conditions and more resistant to disease. Some shrub roses bloom for an extended season while others only bloom briefly in the spring.

If a desire for fresh berries is a consideration, blueberry and blackberry shrubs are also fast growing bushes that give you a great combination of hedges, blooms and berries to enjoy in season. Raspberry and blackberry bushes are fast growing bushes and do require thinning and trimming to maintain shape and encourage new growth for continued blooms and fruit each season.
