Fall and Winter Activities in Michigan

Dog Sledding, Pick Your Own Apples, Upper Peninsula

My spouse and I never get bored with fall and winter in Michigan, there are so many things to do outdoors you can never get bored. Below is a list of some of the things our family and friends love to do during the fall and winter.

Fall means the cider mills are full of people walking the apple orchards and touring the mills. Throughout the months of September and October you can pick your own apples, pumpkins, hay rides, corn mazes and horseback riding. It is the only time of year that you can bring home some freshly made apple cider.

Another must do event that we love to do every fall is attend the Renaissance Festival that runs through October 4Th. This festival is full of fun and exciting medieval events. The food is fantastic and the shows are entertaining. This is a great place for the whole family to get away and enjoy something different.

Many churches are hosting their annual fairs during the fall. This is a great event for the whole family that is free to attend, unless you head into the game tent or beer tents. Each night there is live entertainment featuring a popular local band, each night will feature a different era of music like the sounds of the 50’s and rock n roll. For the children there is petting zoos, inflatable bouncing tents, rides and face painting. What is great about this event, is that the proceeds go to the church to assist them in helping people who are needy.

In the month of December if you travel up north to the upper peninsula there are many activities that are a must see and do. During the last week of September through the second week of October the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is thriving with beautiful fall colors. Taking a long drive down a winding road looking at the maples and oak leafs that are painted with brilliant red coloring against the clear blue sky is breath taking. If you get up early in the morning for your drive, you can catch a glimpse of the frost kissed red leaves which is truly beautiful.

For the truly adventurous people, while you are in the upper peninsula, why not try out the dog sledding tours. In the upper peninsula there are two places where you can experience a ride of your life. Triple Creek Kennels in Munising, and Wilderness Trail Outfitters in Wetmore, both offer tours of 2 hours or up to 7 days for the brave. While you are on your over night mushing tour, you can catch natures awesome light show the northern lights.

For the people who love winter sports, there is plenty to do in Michigan. All over the state there are resorts where you can ski, snowboard and toboggan. No need to be disappointed when the snow is light in the lower half of the state, just pack up your suitcases and head up north where the snow is plentiful for skiers.
