Easy 3-D Mother’s Day Card Craft

A 3-D Mother’s Day Card Craft is a unique way for kids to share their love with mom on Mother’s Day. It is fun and easy to make. Each child can make their own 30-D Mother’s Day cards. If the kids are younger allow them to work on the Mother’s Day Card together, assigning each child a specific task.

Supplies to make a 3-D Mother’s Day Card:

A small box, no larger than a shoe box that opens from only one side

Colorful contact paper or the end of a role of wrapping paper to cover the box

Glue

Scissors

Tape

Small pieces of cardboard scraps

Construction paper or left over printer paper blank on one side

Paint, Magic Markers, or crayons

Making a 3-D Mother’s Day Card:

1. Set the box on its side. It will open using the side flap. The 3-D card will be something like a simple diorama.

2. Paint, draw, or use construction paper cut-outs to make a scene inside the back of the box. The scene should be appropriate for a Mother’s Day card.

We built a 3-D house that resembled the children’s own home. In the background we painted trees, flowers and grass.

Interesting 3-D cards might include a construction paper flower garden. Bend the bottom of stems or use pipe cleaners to help the flowers stand up away from the back of the box.

If the children making the Mother’s Day card are too young to paint, draw, or cut and paste construction paper allow them to use stickers. You may also draw outlines and have the kids paint them.

If you can’t think of any other scenery with which to decorate your card, consider a picture of the kids or the family, framed with a home-made frame. (Painted Popsicle sticks make a quick and easy frame. Use a hot glue gun for quick drying.)

Complete the inside 3-D card scene and allow it to dry before proceeding to the next steps.

3. Cover the entire box with contact paper or wrapping paper. Floral paper looks nice, but if all you have handy is plain paper, allow the kids to decorate it with their own drawings of flowers, stickers, or flowers cut from construction paper.

4. Cover the open flap of the box, but do not secure it to the box. Remember, this is Mother’s window into her 3-D Mother’s Day card. Make the card a little neater by covering the inside of the flap as well as the outside.

5. Once your 3-D card is dry and the contact paper or wrapping paper has been applied your Mother’s Day card is almost complete. The last step, however, is perhaps the most important.

On a small piece of sturdy paper, painted cardboard, or stock paper write your own meaningful sentiment inside your 3-D Mother’s Day card.

The sentiment need not be long, or even eloquent. The important thing is that it is from the heart.

In the 3-D house card we created, mentioned above, we put a small 1 inch sign beside the house which read, “It takes a mother to make a house a home.”

6. Be creative and reflect your family’s personality and creativity in the 3-D Mother’s Day card you design.

7. Write creative verse, as well. Your child’s Mother’s Day message doesn’t have to rhyme. It can be simple. In fact, the most meaningful cards contain messages from the heart.

Enjoy making your 3-D Mother’s Day card. It will be a unique gift and memorable keepsake. I created it one lazy Sunday afternoon when I was watching my sister’s children. The enjoyed making the card because it involved more than drawing or writing on paper. The loved the 3-D aspect of the Mother’s Day card.

Give it a try. Dad’s can help the kid’s make this with very little time and effort. It’s also a great Sunday School project for Mother’s Day.
