Decorating an Orange and Brown Living Room with Modern Style

Furniture Shopping

Orange and brown were very popular colors in the 70’s, and they are making a dramatic comeback. However, they are much richer and far more visually appealing than the hues of decades past. An orange and brown modern living room with white accents is particularly stylish, and other colors including blue and yellow can be incorporated into the decorating scheme. It can become a modern amalgamation of designs and hues, and it can look absolutely fabulous.

I am currently working on decorating an orange and brown modern living room for a client, and we have been shopping for everything from new furniture to accessories. It was not one of my favorite color combinations before beginning the job. It always reminded me of the 70’s when almost everything was either avocado green, chocolate brown, harvest gold and deep orange. Modern hues are considerably more appealing, and I have changed my personal view of the color combination.

Begin with the Walls

When planning any decorating project, start with the walls. More than likely they can use a fresh coat of paint or a new covering of some sort. When decorating the living room for my client, I began by painting the walls a very light shade of tan with soft peach overtones. It would make a fantastic backdrop for the new furnishings and wall art in her brown and orange modern living room.

Furnishing Suggestions

We went on a furniture shopping spree in Orland Park Illinois, and I suggested a modern wingback sofa in brown velvet. My client loved the sofa. I had her select two sets of throw pillows in addition to the brown velvet pillows that came with the furnishing. I gave her the option of several patterns that would work well with the decorating scheme of the modern living room. She chose a pair of camel brown and orange pillows in a modern floral design. The other two were deep brown and white. They made the sofa look far more comfortable, stylish and inviting.

Wall Art in Orange and Brown

One of the last steps when decorating my client’s orange and brown modern living room was selecting a work of wall art that would become the focal point of the space. We browsed the selection at a private photo gallery. All of the art was beautiful, but she selected a gorgeous framed photo of a bright orange sunset over a still blue lake. The resolution was amazing, and it was literally mesmerizing. It looked as if we could step into the photo.

My client plans on completing her modern brown and orange living room with a pair of orange trunks that she will use in place of a coffee table and a large modern area rug that is embellished with deep brown, orange and light blue stenciled flowers on an off white backing. I suggested two dark brown metal planters filled with high quality faux orange daisies to top the trunks. They will become the signature of the design, and her modern living room will look incredible.
