Creating Your Own Toddler’s Drum Set

Cling Wrap, Frisbee

A recent development is that he has started ‘finding’ different things to make ‘drum sticks’ out of, which leaves our silverware drawer rather sparse. Now you can create your child’s own plethora of drums that he can beat on until his heart’s content.

Like any good craft project, you will need to gather your materials.

You will need:

Duct Tape (or Tyvek Housewrap tape available from any home store)
Plastic Cling wrap
An empty/clean cottage cheese container
A Frisbee
Real drum sticks
An oatmeal container
A short (new or well cleaned) trash container with a round lid.
The container for premade pie crusts, or something similar.

Tyvek house wrap (you can probably be given plenty from any construction sight – if you ask nicely) or you can find it for very expensive at a Home store. Another alternative would be to use ‘rip proof’ envelopes available at any store where office supplies are sold.

Using the Tyvek tape wrap, tape your cottage cheese container closed. That is one drum on its own.

Next, use the Frisbee, and wrap it with Tyvek. Tape it well with your tape, and now you have a two sided drum. Make sure to STRETCH out the Tyvek so there is no slack on the Frisbee. This will make your drum sound even better. I would suggest having your parents cut a circle about an inch longer in diameter than the Frisbee for the best results.

Decorate the oatmeal container in much the same way. As a side note, the only oatmeal I see these days that comes in the right shape/size is Quaker.

Finally, with your parent’s permission, tape the house wrap tightly to the top of the trash can, and you have a full drum set. Give your son or daughter the real drum sticks so they can act and sound like a real rock star while drumming their hearts out.

Because Tyvek is not nearly as firm as, say, drum skins, the noise level will not be that distracting, unless your child, like my son, ALSO likes to sing while he drums.
