This is a fun craft recipe for making paper mache with toilet paper. This paper mache recipe is very quick and easy to make. It’s a good little craft to pull out when the kids are bored. Paper mache made with toilet paper is a soft paper mache but it dries hard enough to paint. It’s good to make small objects or to add noses or ears to larger paper mache projects. Kids can use pipe cleaners as armatures and cover the bent shapes with the soft paper mache. They can also use this paper mache to cover bottles, jars or cans to make decorative vases or pencil holders.
You will need glue or paste for this recipe. You can either use white glue or you can use one of my recipes [How to Make Resin Paper Mache Paste] or [How to Make Collage Glue] or [How to Make Decoupage Glue]. Get out the toilet paper and let the fun begin!
Step 1: Gather the following supplies to make paper mache with toilet paper: toilet paper (any brand, any color) and white glue (you can use Elmer’s glue or you can use one of the glue recipes in the resource section of this article).
Step 2: Rip the toilet paper into small pieces and put the pieces of toilet paper in a glass bowl.
Step 3: Add just a little bit of glue to the toilet paper in the bowl and mix with your fingers. You want the toilet paper to be just wet enough to hold a shape.
Step 4: Continue to add more pieces of toilet paper and more glue until you have enough pulp to make your creation. If the pulp is too wet, add more toilet paper. If the pulp is too dry, add more glue.
Step 5: Use the paper mache pulp to make your creations. You can make little figures by using pipe cleaners as an armature, you can cover jars or cans, you can cover small boxes to make decorative boxes, or you can just let your imagination run wild!
Step 6: Let your works of art air dry over night. Thicker items may take longer to dry. When the object is not longer sticky and feels dry, it’s dry!
Step 7: You can paint your paper mache creations with any poster paint (see a recipe in the resource section of this article) or you can use nail polish to paint your objects.
Step 8: Discard or use up any leftover toilet paper paper mache because it will not store.
