I love this craft! It is fun, easy and you can have a finished craft in one afternoon! Very rewarding for those of us who have short attention spans but love to craft. This Rose Covered Lamp Shade is a great way to add a little romantic whimsy to your room. It’s usually the first thing people comment on when they come into my living space. I love roses! The silk roses covering the lamp shade makes the light cast a rosy, vintage glow. It’s beautiful.
This craft would make a great gift for someone who loves roses. You could even create one with daisies or other pretty silk flowers. We recently did this craft together at our church group, it was so much fun.
Here’s what you will need to complete this craft:
4 or 5 bushes of silk roses – You may need less or more depending on how big your shade is. My shade was a medium size. Also, I used roses in a variety of stages, buds and blooms. I chose inexpensive ones from the local dollar store or you could catch them on sale at your local craft store.
1 lampshade in ivory or white – This craft is perfect for those less than perfect lampshades you were thinking about throwing out.
1 pair of wire cutters – Just the standard small hand held pair will do nicely. Every craft store sells these
1 glue gun with pack of glue sticks – Be prepared to use a lot of glue! If you are not sure about how much, get extra. It’s very frustrating to be almost finished and realize you need one more glue stick. Craft nightmare!
Works space and garbage can – You’ll need some workspace and a garbage can for clippings.
First, start your project by making sure you have a plate you can set your glue gun on. You don’t want the glue to muck up your craft table. Then you can begin removing the annoying stickers on your silk flowers. After that you can start snipping the roses from the bushes right at the base of the flower. Some of the less expensive flowers have ugly yellow inserts in the roses, you can toss those. When you’ve snipped all your roses, also snip some leaves. Stuffing some leaves into you lamp shade gives it a more realistic look. Starting at the top of the lamp shade you can begin to work add the roses. Apply glue to the base of the floor and gently push flower on to the lamp shade. Don’t push too hard, you don’t want to tear your shade. Add roses from top to bottom in about 3 inches swatches, making sure to add a leaf every 4 or 4 roses. I tend to use the leaves closer to the upper or lower rim of the shade, but you can do it however you like. You can even choose to keep the leaves off if you like.
Don’t worry about the strings of glue. After your shade is completely dry you can come back with some scissors and snip those away. Let the glue completely harden (about 30 minutes to an hour) and wala.. you have a beautiful rose covered lamp shade. An easy craft!
