Consumer Product Safety Commission Recalls Microwave Because of Fire Hazard

Ge Profile, Kenmore, Microwave Ovens

According to a press release today, December 5, 2007 from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, General Electric Built-in Combination Wall and Microwave Ovens have been recalled due to a possible fire hazard.

Appoximately 92,000 units of this combination wall and microwave, manufactured by GE Consumer & Industrial, of Louisville, Kentucky, have been sold at various department and appliance stores from January 2000 to December 2003. They were each sold for between $1,500 and $2,000.

The potential hazard lies within the microwave unit only. The switch on the door of the microwave oven can overheat and ignite the plastic components in the control area. It is this switch that could potentially cause a fire hazard. The lower thermal oven is safe and does not pose a fire hazard.

There have been 35 reported incidents of minor property damage. One incident reported that a fire damaged the adjacent kitchen cabinets. So far there have been no injuries reported.

The voluntary recall includes GE combination microwave and conventional built-in-wall ovens. They were sold under three brand names of GE, GE Profile and Kenmore. The ovens came in colors of white, black, bisque and stainless steel. You can find the brand name printed on the front of the microwave door at the lower left hand corner. The model number along with the serial number can also be found inside the microwave oven on the left side interior wall.
