Cold Steel 12″ Barong Machete Review

When I first received the knife, I was very impressed. I noticed it had an edge on the spine of the blade going half way up. I think the philosophy of use for this is facing more towards combat than a machete. The edge on the blade was not pleasing, it could barely make a clean cut through paper. The back edge was the same sharpness, you must keep in mind that this is a machete, so the edge is not supposed to be razor sharp, but rather tough and long lasting. The blade had a very impressing tip on it, very thin and has a lot of piercing potential.

The Handle is extremely comfortable, it is grippy and secure. The handle is made out of polypropylene, which is similar to kraton. It has a rubber feeling to it, but is harder. The handle is checkered, has a lanyard hole, and has a piece of material at the end of the handle which prevents your hand from slipping off. When chopping, the handle feels very comfortable and doesn’t dig into your hands. It is hard enough to be secure and soft enough to be comfortable.

The sheath it came with seems to be some kind of nylon material. The sheath’s shape does not fit the blade shape. It has a tight fit, and comes with a little button strap that seems poor quality. Considering I payed 16 dollars for it, I feel its a pretty good deal. The blade is made out of 1055 carbon steel. This is a very good type of steel that has good toughness and sharpenability. Overall I rate this a 4 out of 5. I feel the blade was a bit thin and has room for improvement, although this is definitely a good deal.
