Horse Racing Themes
As sort of an aside, it’s interesting that there is such appeal concerning horse racing themes in California lottery games. The Daily Derby is based on horse racing, but some of us wonder– is this actually a good idea?
Another game played is the Breeders’ Cup. This short-lived promotion occurs briefly in October. Actually, the Breeders’ Cup itself is considered the biggest event for horse racing in the continent, but the California lottery utilizes the event in gambling. This may be unsettling to some, especially coming from the state of California, which many regard as being prone to forward-thinking. It raises questions. Are we glorifying animal exploitation? Although extreme sounding to some, there do tend to be victims when money is involved. There are those who say the horses are treated well, or it’s just a race, not hurting anybody. Still, many of us are familiar with the stories of horses outliving their usefulness in racing, comparing in many respects to greyhound racing. The one thing that may distinguish horse racing is the notion that jockeys so attached to their horses for all the breeding and training and grooming involved in their lives and careers, that they do form a bigger bond and attachment to the animals, who receive better treatment as a result. Is this idea enough to erase the impression of many, that old or injured horses eventually become turned into glue or dog food? And, if the worry of this nature is truly only speculative, is it still in bad taste to promote or support anything of an exploitative nature for monetary gains?
CA Lotto Scams
For Canadians, some bad news– very recently, according to Kristen Schorsch of Southtown Star, there have been issues with people receiving checks and letters from those claiming to be either Pacific or Atlantic Lottery. Letters inform the readers that they’ve won the lottery and the enclosed checks are for use in paying taxes associated with their win. Unfortunately, the checks are drawing out funds from a company called Celtic International– fraudulently, of course.
If you received this manner of correspondence whether you are in California or Canada, I am sorry to inform you that you have probably not won the lottery.
