Best Nursery and Garden Centers in Memphis

Garden Care, Plant Diseases, Shelby County

Spring is already almost here and Memphians are already going wild in the home and garden stores. I simply won’t go to Home Depot on a weekend now. It’s too hard to stave off the stampedes. But there are some places that are top-notch suppliers of plant and tree-stock It’s just a matter of knowing some basics before you go in and take out that credit card or write a check. This is a little checklist of things to consider with your purchases Do not get seduced by blooming plants. Pinch off the blooms before planting. The plant will put its initial energy into establishing roots and foliage, not flowers. A healthy root system will produce flowers all summer. Always try to buy in off-seasons to get the best bargains. Never buy root-bound plants in pots or baskets. Avoid plants with tightly compacted roots and those with yellow foliage and weak stems. When planting, gently loosen roots so they will spread out into the soil.
Buy locally grown plants whenever possible, because they are acclimated to your region. Now, that said, these local nurseries are some of the best in Memphis.

Dabney has some excellent selection of trees and plants in this area. Located out in eastern Shelby County, this 150-acre nursery has been supplying the area’s horticulturalists with all they need for over 25 years. They guarantee that all their trees will bud and leaf out or money back. It’s a very reliable place with an excellent staff. They acclimate their stock to local conditions so their customers will not have to worry so much about root shock when they go to plant the trees. They also have an extensive hosta collection with many varieties nor ordinarily seen at some of the smaller nurseries. The rose selections are also impressive. Dabney’s prices are quite reasonable and their service excellent.

Bayless Greenhouses is one of those well-known secrets among Memphis gardeners-the ones who are purists and bargain hunters at the same time. Located in the north Memphis area of Shelby Forrest, it’s just enough out of the way to attract only people who’ve heard of it and their friends who’ve become devotees. The best thing about this place is actually three things. It’s incredibly low-priced, the people who staff it are very courteous and know their stock, and its very well stocked with the samehigh-quality plants and trees that all the other nurseries in Memphis have. But the combination on low pricing, friendly and knowledgeable service make this a great local garden center for anyone’s continued patronage.

TREES BY TOULIATOS
2020 E. Brooks Rd. 901-346-8065
I can’t even begin to describe this place. It’s one of the few nurseries in Memphis that sells varieties of bamboo. Patrons can get plants here that they can’t find anywhere else. Horticulturists are all over the place. Plato Touliatos is a genius about plant diseases and he offer his comments when and if you can come across him. Just going here to look at their unusual magnolias, hostas, lilies and ferns is an even all by itself. They have water garden plants that are very extensive. This is not a bargain nursery, though. But if your pocketbook isn’t deep, come here to browse their plantings and get some ideas for what might suit your garden. He has several acres of plants and greenhouses to wander through.
