Beginners Guide to a Navel Piercing

Belly Button Rings, Body Modification, Navel Piercing

When you get your navel pierced the procedure should be performed by a licensed professional. To start with your navel will be cleaned with a disinfectant like Iodine before the procedure is performed to insure that the area is sterile. Then the piercer will mark the location in which the piercing will be placed.

This should be done while you are standing to insure that the piercing will be placed correctly on the body. You want your navel piercing to be centered, straight and visible when standing. After the piercer has marked the area you will be asked to have a seat and lay back.

You should be laying down when your navel piercing is performed so that you, the client are comfortable not mention it is a lot easier to pierce your navel while you are laying down.

All navel piercings are different because everyone’s anatomy is different. The outer rim of the navel is then clamped with some forceps to insure that the piercing is placed in the correct location and is straight. The forceps or clamps are a little tight so they may be uncomfortable but nothing unbearable.

The piercing of the navel is the process in which a needle is passed through the tissue of the outer rim of the navel. Once the needle is through the tissue a curved barbell made of 316L implant grade surgical steel that is usually 3/8 or 7/16 of an inch in length and in some cases 1/2 inch in length with round balls on either end is inserted in the hole that was made by the needle as the needle is removed. The length all depends on the anatomy of a person.

This act is done at the same time. You see the jewelry actually fits into the end of the needle so the jewelry just slides right into place as the needle comes out, just as it should. The placement and wearing of the jewelry helps keep the piercing hole open because if the jewelry is removed for any length of time the pierced hole will close up.

Sometimes there is some bleeding when this procedure is performed so do not be alarmed if you bleed some afterwards because it is quite normal. The bleeding is different for everyone but it usually stops within just a few minutes. This may sound like a horrible procedure but it is not as bad as it seems.

Many people say that pinching your navel between your own finger nails hurts worse then having your navel pierced. The piercing will be tender for the first few days to try to keep tight clothing off of it. The navel usually takes 3 to 6 weeks to heal depending on how you take care of your piercing and on your immune system for healing.

There are many different types of jewelry you can buy and wear in the navel piercing. You can wear curved barbells or banana bar, captive bead ring or loop, circular barbell or horseshoe, twisters, jewelry that dangles there is an endless array of colors and styles and many other options. There is even jewelry that is bendable and plastic for women when they get pregnant so that they can keep their piercing through out their pregnancy and jewelry to conceal or hide the piercing for those of you worried about a job, school, parents or other reasons. Like I said there is all kind of options when it comes to navel jewelry.
