Alternatives to Basic Pizza Sauce

Meat Sauce, Pizza Sauce, Salad Dressings

Who doesn’t love a good pizza? Unfortunately, the same old thing can get boring after a while. Thankfully, there are thousands of different ways to fix pizza and one of the easiest changes you can make is to use a different sauce. After all, no one said you had to use pizza sauce with every pie. If you’re not sure where to begin, here are a few suggestions to get you started. Plus, tips on what to serve on top of the sauce.

Salad Dressings

Who said that bottle of ranch or Italian dressing was just for topping a salad? Salad dressings make a wonderful pizza sauce. Whether you’re making a buffalo chicken pizza with ranch dressing or a Mediterranean pizza with Italian dressing, salad dressings add bold flavor with ease. You could even use Caesar salad dressing to make a chicken Caesar pizza. This is one pizza sauce alternative that allows you to be truly creative.

Alfredo Sauce

If you’re looking for something rich and decadent, Alfredo sauce is the perfect choice. Add the sauce to a thick crust and top with provolone, Parmesan and ricotta cheese along with chicken, black olives and red onion and you’ve got a new flavor that is sure to please the pasta lovers in your house. You could also top the pizza with steak and blue cheese for a gourmet pie.

Meat Sauce

Chances are you usually have a bit of meat sauce leftover after you have a big spaghetti dinner. Instead of throwing it out, use those leftovers on your next pizza. Add ricotta, a thick layer of sauce and a thick layer of mozzarella for a lasagna pizza. You could also mix some fresh herbs into the sauce to give it a fresher flavor. Also, make sure you use a thick crust because a thin crust cannot hold up to these heavy toppings.

Salsa

Who said pizzas had to be Italian? Salsa adds a Mexican flare to pizza and is the perfect base for taco seasoned beef, refried beans, Mexican blended cheese and a final layer of lettuce, tomato and sour cream, once it comes out of the oven. For the best results, use a smooth salsa. Chunky salsas don’t add enough liquid and can make your pizza seem a bit dry.

Barbecue Sauce

For those that love their barbecue, there’s nothing better than a barbecue pizza. While many places use chicken, you could also use pulled pork or even pieces of ribs pulled straight from the bone. Use a mixture of cheddar and jack cheese for the top, along with some chopped onions and you’ve got a pizza perfect for summer. Of course, if you really want to spice things up, add a bit of smoky hot sauce to your barbecue sauce.

Ketchup and Mustard

Almost any condiment in your refrigerator can become a pizza sauce, even the standard ketchup and mustard. Mix about a cup of ketchup with two tablespoons (or more) of mustard to create a tasty sauce for a cheeseburger pizza. You can then top the pizza with cheddar cheese, ground beef, onions, bacon and whatever else you love on your burger. This pizza is a kid pleaser for sure, but adults love it too.
