Mountain State University, located in Beckley, West Virginia is a private not-for-profit college that offers associate, bachelor and master degrees. The college was opened in 1933 and has grown throughout the years with campuses in Martinsburg, West Virginia; Monaca, Pennsylvania; Altamonte Springs, Florida; and Hickory, North Carolina. The main campus is located in Beckley, West Virginia a population of 25,000 or more located in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Mountain State University has one of the top NAIA basketball teams in the country. Coach Bob Bolen has built the program into a national powerhouse. The team was the championship in 2005 and have been in the tournament for the last 10 years. The school now has a soccer team along with a girls volleyball and softball team.

Mountain State offers in-class, online, or a variety of other ways to complete classes. The Master’s programs cater to adult working students. One of the trademark Master’s Degree is in Strategic Leadership where students can complete the program in 18 months.

The city of Beckley, West Virginia is very family oriented and offers student the opportunity to enjoy school and classes that are small. There are all kinds of restaurants, movie theaters, shopping, and outdoor leisure activities to do in Beckley, West Virginia.

The nightlife in Beckley, West Virginia is somewhat limited but there are many small bars and restaurants where students can hangout and meet people.

The city of Beckley, West Virginia is located around major interstates such as interstate 64 and interstate 77. The city is about 50 miles from Charleston, West Virginia which is the state capitol of West Virginia.

One of the favorite places to hangout for the college students is Foster’s Bar and Grill located on Neville Street a few hundred feet from the college. The bar is packed on the weekends and I must say they have one of the best cheeseburgers in town as well as cold beer.

Whitewater rafting and fishing are two of the biggest activities for students. Whitewater rafting the Gauley River is called “Beast of East” and is one of the wildest whitewaters east of the Mississippi. Students can fish at a variety of rivers and waters within a 50 mile radius. Two of the biggest rivers in the Greenbrier River and the New River.

Transportation is pretty limited to personal vehicles, but there is one taxi cab company in town. However, everything is fairly close to the college so students can walk to locations within the city. There is an Amtrak station located in Prince, West Virginia about 9 miles from the college.
