A Simple Guide to Decorating with Mirrors

Bathroom Vanity, Decorating with Mirrors, Kitchen Makeover

A simple and effective way of creating the illusion of a larger room is to decorate with mirrors. Mirrors are unique in that they are neutral in design and will fit in with virtually any home décor. By decorating with mirrors you will be adding light reflective surfaces to your home that will make it look larger and more open, therefore creating an inviting atmosphere. In this guide, we will examine how simple decorating with mirrors can be in every room of the house.

Decorating with mirrors in the bathroom

A mirror is a must in any bathroom as it in not only attractive too look at, but it’s something we all need for grooming purposes. When decorating with mirrors in the bathroom, you’ll want to select a mirror that is the same width as your bathroom vanity or counter space. This will create one smooth line that is pleasing to the eye. To accent your mirror, use proper lighting to evenly illuminate it and eliminate shadows. To do this, light sources should be placed in a position that evenly distributes light from above, below and on both sides of the mirror. This is an effect known as cross-lighting, which is not as harsh as using one light source. It casts a softer, more flattering glow on those that stand in front of the mirror.

Decorating with mirrors in the kitchen

Since all kitchens should have a backsplash in place behind the stove, you can decorate with mirrors and kill two birds with one stone! Install mirrored tiles behind the cook top, or use one large mirror for a quick and easy fix. Remember, mirrors are not the only light reflective surfaces that can be used in the kitchen. Stainless steel appliance will also reflect light, so be aware that too much of a good thing can occur.

Decorating with mirrors in the living room

An unattractive way to decorate with mirrors in the living room, is to place them on a wall opposite of artwork, or a decorative fireplace. This will add even more focus to the other wall and the item you are trying to showcase. Avoid using a mirror directly across from a window that receives intense light, as it can cause and extreme glare at certain times of the day.

Decorating with mirrors in the laundry room

If your laundry room is small, dark, and dingy, you can open up the space and give the appearance of a window by using a medium- large mirror. To pull this home decorating trick off, simply place a mirror on an open wall (this could be above the washer and dryer or elsewhere in the room) and center it so that it is at eye level. If you’re using a framed mirror, that’s all you’ll need to do! If not, you can dress up your ‘window’ by placing a curtain rod above the mirror and adding a homey set of café style curtains for a finished look.

Decorating with mirrors in the basement

Basements have notoriously low ceilings, which can make the room feel closed-in and short. To battle this problem, mirrored ceilings can be used to help basement rooms feel more spacious and inviting. Mirrored acrylic sheets, or large mirrored tiles are an affordable option that look great when paired with light-toned furnishings and carpets. When you decorate with mirrors in the basement, you’ll resolve the problem of the room feeling ‘dungeon-like’ and turn it into a living space the entire family can enjoy.

TIP – In addition to all the tips we’ve listed here, mirrors are also a useful way of disguising damaged or flawed walls. Have a small hole in the wall? Cover it with a mirror! Have a room that doesn’t receive adequate light? Use a mirror to reflect light and brighten it up. When decorating with mirrors, the possibilities are endless!
