A Review of Wild on Wax in Houston, Texas

Bikini Wax, Bikini Waxing, Brazilian Wax, Brazilian Waxing

Wild On Wax in Houston, Texas gets nothing but five star reviews on CitySearch, so I thought I’d be brave and get a bikini wax to see if all of the hype was justified. I’ve had very bad experiences with bikini waxing in the past where I’d wind up bruised and nearly in tears due to the pain; so I let five years go by before attempting my next professional bikini wax. Fortunately, I found the one person who really knows her stuff. D’Lesa is the owner of Wild On Wax and has been in the business for ten years; she is licensed but through research and experimenting, she has perfected the art of waxing. Of course everyone learns the basics in beauty school but it takes someone who is passionate about esthetics to do the job well. D’Lesa understands the ins and outs of the skin’s dermis just like a dermatologist – or even better for that matter.

D’Lesa specializes in what Americans call a Brazilian wax but it’s really the Hollywood – where everything goes – although she’s thinking of renaming it the Australian because it takes off everything down below. I wasn’t quite ready for the entire kit and caboodle so I opted for the real Brazilian where there is a small strip left in place covering the important bits. At first D’Lesa had me keep my underwear on because she wasn’t sure how much I wanted to have removed, but after I told her, she had me remove my knickers so she could do her job more efficiently. You’d think this would make me uncomfortable (since she wasn’t a gynecologist) but she has a knack for making people feel comfortable no matter what they are wearing – or not wearing.

She explained that the Brazilian blue wax that is used has more paraffin than oil and therefore adheres to the hair and not the skin. The blue wax heats up in the warming pot but it’s not hot on the skin; and then it does something that is similar to shrink wrap where it adheres to the hair where it is applied. The wax then hardens and is pulled off gently; there is no tugging so the hair removal process is a lot less painful – and in some areas, there was absolutely no pain whatsoever.

If you’ve ever heard of “back, sack and crack” then you’ll know that this is a full service waxing for men. D’Lesa does this too (with your help of course,) so men, there’s no need to be embarrassed if you want to go hair-free like the ladies. Since the Brazilian removes all hair down below – front and back (hence the term “crack” in the “back, sack and crack”) – so don’t be surprised when you’re asked to roll over onto your side. I assumed getting this area waxed would hurt the most, but perplexingly, I didn’t feel a thing – now that’s proof that Wild On Wax is the best! After she used the blue wax, D’Lesa used the creamy sensitive resin wax with strips – this is a hypoallergenic wax that is suitable for sensitive skin – to get all of the smaller hair out that isn’t visible to the naked eye; again that didn’t hurt at all. A pain-free Brazilian waxing experience that didn’t come with humiliation; yes, it is possible.

D’Lesa talked to me the entire time and even had a video of INXS playing – presumably this tactic is used to relax clients but it wasn’t necessary because D’Lesa does that all on her own. D’Lesa also makes sure the conditions are very sanitary which was important to me; she uses a new wooden stick in which to dip into the wax each time so I know that nothing is being cross-contaminated. D’Lesa explained why ingrown hair occurs, and gave me helpful tips like icing the waxed area (after my appointment,) and taking Vitamin C. The ice closes the pores so nothing (like bacteria) is given an opportunity to infect the them and it also reduces inflammation. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and also helps prevent inflammation, which often occurs after waxing.

I made the mistake of not asking how much it was going to cost when I made the appointment, so I nearly had a heart attack when I learned (after my waxing) that it cost $75! Of course it was worth every penny and I have no hesitation whatsoever recommending Wild On Wax to anyone: males and females. I’m looking forward to seeing how long it takes for the hair to grow back and if (when it does,) it becomes ingrown. That’s the real test.

Parking is a bit tricky if you drive a SUV because the driveway to the house – yes, this establishment is at the back of what looks like a house and is on the second floor – is very narrow, and it’s difficult to turn around once you do park. That is my only complaint but I’ll know for next time to reverse park (if space allows.)
