A Review of Reser’s Red Skinned Potato Salad

Potato Salad

My family loves my potato salad, and I always make it from scratch because I am very fussy about potato salads. This morning my husband went to Fred Meyer to get gas, and came home with our lunch. He purchased a roasted chicken, Reser’s Barbecued Baked Beans, and Reser’s Red Skinned Potato Salad.

Description

This Reser’s Potato Salad comes in a plastic container, which is clear and oval shaped, holding one pound of salad. It’s found in the refrigerated aisle in our deli section, and the front of the cardboard packaging reads “red potatoes, onions, green bell peppers and spices in a creamy dressing. There is a plastic tab on the side that acts as a freshness seal, once this is snapped off the lid removes easily. It also snaps back on tightly to store any leftover salad.

Ingredients

Red potatoes, mayonnaise, onion, water, vinegar, salt, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate to protect flavor, dried parsley, spice, sugar, modified corn starch, xanthan gum.

Thoughts

I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of this Reser’s Red Skinned Potato Salad! I have tried numerous store bought potato salads over the years while attending barbecues and picnics (other people bring them, not I), and I have never cared for the taste. The Reser’s still had the red skins on the potatoes, which gave it nice color, and the green peppers and onions were added in just the right proportions.

Some store bought potato salads are a bit runny, but the texture of the Reser’s was perfect, nice and thick, like homemade potato salad! What it lacked was chopped boiled eggs, and a few spices. I felt it was just a tad bit bland, so I added in salt, pepper and dill weed, and those small additions really made a big difference in the taste! Wondering if I could really make this potato salad taste close to my homemade recipe, I then added a chopped up hard boiled egg, a dash of mustard, and a chopped up dill pickle. The results were amazing, this was really close to tasting like a potato salad made from scratch! The potatoes were the perfect texture and consistency, not hard or mushy.

Reser’s has been around for over 50 years and use family recipes, and I am definitely impressed with the quality and taste of their potato salad. If I were in a hurry, I would not hesitate to purchase this and add a few of my own ingredients to it, and I don’t think anybody would be able to tell that it wasn’t homemade.

The plastic containers are nice enough that you can use them to store other leftovers as well.

The 1 pound tub retails for $3.49.
