When you travel to Ohio, you might notice that some of the roads have an odd and unsettling feel to them. That shouldn’t be surprising given that many of the roads crisscrossing the state are haunted.

Carpenter Road in Beavercreek is the site of a suicide. During the 1970’s a man walked into the trees near a curve on the road, and hanged himself. Late at night when the road is foggy, people see a shadow alongside the road and hear a man moaning.

In Bowling Green Holcomb Road is haunted. A school bus driver crashed his bus into the woods near the road, killing himself and the children. Drivers in the area sometimes see the man’s face burned into a tree, see ghostly headlights, and have the electrical systems in their cars go haywire.

Cincinnati, Ohio is home to two haunted roads. Buffalo Ridge has two separate ghosts. One is a group of teenagers who were killed on the road and can now be heard screaming; some also claim to hear the sounds of a car crashing. There is also a story of a ghostly bride who walks the area. The woman was killed while wearing her wedding dress and now walks the road looking for her fiancé. Lick Road in Cincinnati is also haunted. A woman named Amy was supposedly killed by her boyfriend, and people traveling down the road sometimes hear her screaming.

In Cloves, Ohio you’ll come across Bridgetown Road. Here is where some people have seen an odd shadow moving across the road at night. Make sure to visit 5 Points in Cortland where 5 roads all share a weird history including a few strange deaths. Now people claim that the ghosts of two men hang around the road, ready to help the next stranded pedestrian.

Crown City is home to a haunted road known as Route 7 or the narrows. People have spotted headlights in the rearview mirror when no one is on the road, see boulders fall from ahead that aren’t actually there, and feel cold spots. When in Cuba, you might get lucky enough to see the ghost of a large white horse running down the road.

Tealtown Road in Eastgate is home to a residual haunting. Two men once fought in the woods, and one shot the other before shooting himself. People now see the two men arguing and hear the loud sound of a gunshot. You can also visit the haunted Lexington Road in Eaton where figures and orbs are seen coming out of a local cemetery.

Streeter Road in Mantua is an odd haunted Ohio road. People sometimes see glowing red eyes along the road, and hear something screaming or squealing in the words. Those who step out of their car claim to be chased out of the woods by some strange type of creature.

Fudge Road in Gratis is an interesting place to visit, simply because of the sheer number of stories. Some claim there is a strange creature that runs along the road. Others claim the road is haunted by two men who were killed in a drug bust during the 1980’s. State Route 170 in New Middletown is haunted by a man who once died on the road. Many people claim to have seen him over the years, wearing a flannel shirt and standing on the side of the road. These witnesses also claim that they could see right through the man.

There was once a small house alongside Hisey Road in New Waterford where a teenage boy killed himself. After the house burned down, the ghost of the boy began haunting the side of the road.

Milford Road in Oxford, Ohio is one of the most famous haunted roads in the state. A young couple once met on the road in secrecy because the girl’s father hated her boyfriend. He would flash his motorcycle headlight three times, and if she flashed the porch lights three times, he knew the coast was clear. One night the man was killed on the road, and some claim that by flashing your lights three times, you’ll get three back in return. The same story is told about Oxford State Road, which makes both stories a little hard to believe.

Coffin Road in Paulding is home to a murderous ghost who killed a group of children before hanging himself. Now people claim to see children running through the woods and other strange things.

You should also swing by Black Rabbit Road in Samantha where a baby was hung from the side of the bridge. If you turn off your car while sitting on the bridge, you’ll hear a baby crying in the distance and see the noose still hanging over the side. When in Portsmouth, check out the Dry Run Pond Creek Road where a little girl died in a house fire. Today she can still be seen running through the woods and laughing as she plays.

Lexington Road or Jewish Cemetery Road is haunted by the cemetery caretaker. The man and his dog were both killed on the road, and many people claim they have seen the ghost of the dog wandering along the road. A hit and run victim haunts Gunn Road in Springfield, Ohio. A small sign marks the death, and if you stop on that spot your car will stall and not start again.

In St. Paris the haunted road is known as Lonesome Road. This road was once on private property and the owner was a cantankerous old coot who didn’t want anyone near his land. After his death the road was made public, which upset the spirit. Today he supposedly appears on the side of the road and is known to hit passing cars. Some people also claim that his eyes are as dark as night, or a glowing red color.

Hansley Road in Sugar Grove is also haunted. Legend states that a woman named Anna once murdered her fiancé before taking her own life. Now if you yell for her, the woman will appear on the road. Trenton’s Wehr Road is also haunted. The caretaker of a nearby cemetery was supposedly killed in the area and now appears on the side of the road to warn people away.

If you head to Troy, Ohio be on the lookout for Polecat Road. Legend claims that the road was once the site of a KKK group as well as a gruesome motorcycle accident. Today people sometimes see orbs bouncing along the road. Along Stoney Creek Road in Urbana you may see two ghosts running towards your car or hear people talking and shouting in the woods.

Then there’s Bigrun Road in Wakefield where an old school burned down, trapping dozens of students inside. Some people claim to see the ghost of a burned girl in an old-fashioned cheerleader outfit along the side of the road. Also take a drive down Horseshoe Bend Road in West Milton where a child was killed during a game of hide and seek. Today people claim to see the boy playing in the creek next to the road, and sometimes walking on the banks.

The next time you’re driving down one of the roads in Ohio, you might want to keep your windows up, your doors locked, and your eyes peeled for something that might be out there.
