8 Cool Accessories to Pimp Your Closet

Valet

Custom closets are about more than just hanging and shelf space. If you want to truly customize your space and make it an organizational dream, there are a few accessories you won’t want to forget.

Your design consultant should be prepared to offer you the latest and most popular closet accessories to suit your needs. If not, be sure to ask. And I am not just talking about huge, walk-in closets. Many of these items will add functionality to even a small wall closet (sometimes called a reach-in).

Here are my favorite and best-selling custom closet accessories.

Custom Closet Accessory: Pull-Out Swivel Mirror

This pull-out swivel mirror from Sidelines may be one of the more extravagant closet accessories (about $300), but it is worth every penny to the person who needs a full-length mirror, but has no space to hang one.

This cool mirror slides into a section of your long-hanging items, taking up only a few inches of space. When you need to check your look, simply slide the mirror out, pivot 90 degrees and step back two feet. This 13 inch-by-48 inch mirror provides a full-length image. It is available in several finishes.

Custom Closet Accessory: Valet Rod

Your very own valet rod will make you feel like you are in a five-star resort. A simple telescoping rode pulls out from between the shelves of your custom closet. Use it to set out your clothes the night before, when packing for a trip, or simply putting away hanging laundry.

This inexpensive little beauty ($40-$50) is a must-have for the fashionista in us all. The valet rod is available in a variety of finishes to match other elements of your custom closet.

Custom Closet Accessory: Sliding Tie or Belt Rack

Sliding tie or belt racks are great accessories for both men and women, whether you need to store ties or scarves, belts or purses. This handy accessory slides into of section of hanging clothes, out of sight until you need it. Then, you just pull it out to select the appropriate tie or belt and tuck it away for next time.

Depending on style, such as these from Organize It, sliding tie or belt racks range in price from about $50 to $80.

Custom Closet Accessory: Jewelry Drawer Insert or Valet Drawer

If you like to have all of your clothing and accessories in one place, a jewelry or valet drawer is a must for your custom closet. Several styles are available from companies such as October Company, or a custom jewelry drawer can be built to your specifications (just ask your design consultant during your free in-home consultation).

Jewelry drawer inserts commonly have velvet compartments, but are also available with acrylic dividers. Either will organize all of your precious jewels to making coordinating with your wardrobe easy as pie. As the name implies, the jewelry drawer insert simply drops into an existing drawer in your custom closet (size restrictions may apply).

A valet drawer is a great option for the gentlemen. It is simply a velvet-lined drawer to keep watches and other items from sliding around when the drawer is opened or closed.

There are many styles of jewelry drawer inserts from which to choose, with prices ranging from $80 to well over $400.

Custom Closet Accessory: Pull-Out Pant Rack

The pull-out pant rack, like this one from Rev-a-Shelf, eliminates those awful hanger marks on your slacks. Available in several sizes and finishes, the pull-out pant rack slides into a section of your custom closet, keeping pants hung nice and tidy. To select a pair of pants, just pull out the smooth-sliding rack and make your choice.

Pull-out pant racks range in price from about $130 to $180, depending on size and finish.

Custom Closet Accessory: Drawer Divider

Are you tired of digging through a pile of socks trying to find a matched pair? Despair no more – a drawer divider is the answer you have been looking for. Available in several sizes to fit a variety of drawers, a divider will have you dressed and out the door in a flash.

Drawer dividers, like these from Clear Systems, help you keep your hosiery neatly stored and visible at a glance. Prices range from $50 to $75.

Custom Closet Accessory: Decorative Rods

Decorative rods are a simple and inexpensive way to add some style to your custom closet. Sure, standard oval chrome rods to the trick, but wouldn’t you love to add a splash of pizzazz without breaking the bank?

Designer rods are available in a variety of finishes, such as oil rubbed bronze and dull nickel, to complement other design elements in your custom closet. They are round instead of oval and are the perfect pop of color. At only about $10 each, a decorative rod is a splurge you can’t afford not to take.
