5 Reasons Not to Cut Your Hair at Home

Cut Hair, Cut Your Own Hair

It can be extremely tempting to pull out a pair of scissors and begin snipping away at your locks. Perhaps you don’t have the money or the time to schedule an appointment at the salon? Maybe the last time you were with your stylist she cut off way too much? Either way, there are many reasons that you should not cut your hair on your own, unless you have professional experience. There’s much more to a great hairstyle than just “cutting.” You must deal with texture, diameter, angles, straight lines, and layers. There are a multitude of reasons why you should never cut your own hair, but we’ll begin with the basics.

1. Craft scissors do not work on hair. Although they will certainly cut your hair, they can cause a great deal of damage to the ends. You probably won’t notice the damage for a few weeks, and that is when the ends will appear dry and split. Only hair shears should be used to cut hair.

2. You don’t know how much you’re cutting off. When you cut your own hair, it can be difficult to tell how much you’re cutting off until it’s too late. Once you’ve cut off a piece of hair, there’s no going back. People often find that they cut off more hair then what is actually needed.

3. Not all hair should be cut the same way. Whether you have curly, wavy, straight, thick, or thin hair, it requires different types of cutting. Professional stylists have the ability to cut different types of hair but you do not. Some textures require cutting while wet, others while dry.

4. You’re not sure how much of your hair needs cutting. Do you know what split ends look like? Cutting the very tips of your hair won’t always take care of the problem. In reality, it can make it worse as you are causing more damage and creating more split ends.

5. When it all goes wrong, you’ll end up losing more. It may seem like a good idea to cut your own hair and save a few bucks, but you’ll end up spending it anyways when you have to go to a salon to correct your mistake. You’ll end losing more hair than you would have had to in the first place.

There is a reason why cosmetologists must have a license to do hair. All of that training that they undergo to acquire that license is also meaningful. Keep the haircut and styling to the professionals. It’s very easy to cut too much hair off if you don’t know what you’re doing. Consider these tips before you decide to give yourself a haircut a home.
