5 Brands of Mead

Harris Teeter, Honey Wine, Wine Stores

For many in the country there is sort of a revival of older times. With the growth of the pagan religion, many are rediscovering or discovering mead wine. Mead wine is an alcoholic beverage made with fermented honey instead of grape juice like other wine. It has a varying alcohol content ranging from either a light ale or strong wine. It may be sparkling, dry, sweet, and semi-sweet. It is also sometimes infused with flavors from spices and fruits. Hops can also be added for a less sweet form of mead. While many make homemade mead, for some it is impossible. There are not that many brands of mead wine available but here is a good selection of them that are fairly priced.

Chaucer’s Honey Mead

The honey for this specialty dessert-style wine is produced in hives throughout Northern California. It is composed of a blend of three types of honey: alfalfa, sage and orange blossom. Each type brings a unique quality to the blend and contributes to the overall complexity of the Mead. Alfalfa is neutral in flavor but yields a dark, amber color. The orange blossom brings a floral bouquet to the nose of the wine. Sage brings subtle nuances into the blend.

HoneyRun Mead

This DRY and LIGHT Mead is made by fermenting honey, and has very little residual sugar. HoneyRun Dry Mead is less sweet than many other meads, and goes well with white fish and shellfish. They come in fruit varieties. This is a kosher mead.

B. Nektar Mead

B. Nektar Meadery was founded in 2006 by Brad and Kerri Dahlhofer, with the help of their good friend Paul Zimmerman. Brad has been an avid homebrewer since 1998, making beers, meads, ciders and wine for his own enjoyment. When Brad and Kerri got married in 2005, he made a mead to toast with at their wedding and received great reviews from the guests. Jokingly, he said that he’d someday open a meadery. Paul, a long-time friend and fellow homebrewer, soon began making meads along with Brad in the Dahlhofers’ basement. Their meads quickly began winning awards at homebrewing competitions.
