2011 Summer Movie Blockbuster Guide

Wondering what is coming to the big screen in summer 2011? The following are the big blockbusters coming out this summer.

April 29 – Fast Five

Starting off the summer movie season is the fifth movie in the Fast and the Furious series. Paul Walker and Vin Diesel reprise their roles along with newcomer Dwayne Johnson/The Rock.

May 6 – Thor

The first in many superhero films this summer, Thor follows the story of the Norse God and how he comes to the Marvel universe of superheroes. The film stars Chris Hemsworth in the title role along with Natalie Portman.

May 20 – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

The fourth film in the Pirates series brings back Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush. Penélope Cruz has been brought on board and replaces Kiera Knightley.

May 26 – The Hangover Part II

The Hangover brings back everyone from the surprise 2009 comedy that brought in nearly $300 million in the box office.

May 27 – Kung Fu Panda 2

The follow up to the 2008 animated hit has a huge cast of stars, including Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, Dan Fogler, Michael Clarke Duncan, Michelle Yeoh, Gary Oldman, and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

June 3 – X-Men: First Class

In this prequel to the X-men movie series, we see the early years of the X-men as Charles Xavier and Magneto start their school for the gifted.

June 10 – Super 8

A lot still isn’t known about this film, except that J. J. Abrams is directing and Steven Spielburg is producing. That alone should make this a must see movie.

June 17 – Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds plays the Green Lantern, one of the iconic Justice League members from DC Comics.

June 24 – Cars 2

Cars 2 follows up the hit Pixar film from 2006, staring the voice work of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, and Michael Caine.

July 1 – Transformers: Dark of the Moon

The third film in the Transformers series has the Autobots and Decepticons doing battle yet again. Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson reprise their roles. Megan Fox is out though and has been replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

July 15 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

There’s not much to say, it’s the finale of the Harry Potter film series.

July 22 – Captain America: The First Avenger

The third Marvel superhero movie of the summer brings the origin of Captain America to the big screen. It stars Chris Evans in the titular role. Chris Evans is familiar with playing Marvel superheroes, having played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four series.

July 29 – The Smurfs

The Smurfs brings the comic and animated TV series to the big screen. The voices of Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, Jeff Foxworthy, Paul Reubens, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, and Kenan Thompson will be in the film.

July 29 – Cowboys and Aliens

Based on a popular graphic novel, this sci-fi western stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde. It was produced by Steven Spielburg, Brian Grazer, and Ron Howard.

August 5 – Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This prequel to the original Planet of the Apes is a reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. It has an all-star cast including James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, and Andy Serkis.

August 19 – Conan The Barbarian

Conan the Barbarian comes back to the big screen for the first time in 25 years. Jason Momoa plays the title role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
