The clothing of the 1960’s is some of the most recognizable clothing associated with an era. Like any other decade, men and women in the 1960’s desired to wear fashionable clothing during the Winter, as well as other times of the year.
Fashion in the early 1960’s was much different from that of the late 1960’s, and evolved from dull-colored clothing to much brighter clothing later on. Winter clothing during the entire decade was fashionable, but usually managed to maintain practicality. Some notable Winter clothing types worn in the 1960’s include outerwear, holiday wear, cardigans and fur-trimmed accessories.
Outerwear
Outerwear worn in the Winters of the 1960’s varied according to the activities of the wearers. Fur-trimmed parkas were commonly worn while performing Winter sports, such as skiing. Longer walking coats or pea coats were worn by men and women alike for everyday purposes, such as shopping or going to work. Both men and women wore hats during cold weather. Often, these hats were made of wool, in order to keep the wearers warm.
Holiday Wear
Holiday parties were common during the 1960’s. Clothing worn at these parties varied greatly from one person to the next, and according to the formality of the event. Often, women wore one-piece jumpsuits made of such materials as velvet, which were decorated with sequins.
Ruffled shirts and skirts were commonly worn, and were often made from sparkly fabric. Tights of varying textures and colors were worn underneath. Men commonly wore suits during this time period. The colors of their shirts varied greatly, and could have been pink, red, turquoise, white or any color in between.
Sweaters
Both men and women commonly wore sweaters during the Winters of the 1960’s. These sweaters were often made of mohair, which was named for the fuzzy texture of the material from which the sweaters were constructed. These sweaters were usually over-sized, and appeared to be slightly large for the people who wore them. Sweaters were commonly worn throughout the 1960’s, although they came in brighter colors toward the end of the decade.
Fur-Trim
Fur-trimmed accessories, such as hats, gloves and scarves, were fashionable during the Winters of the 1960’s. These accessories almost always matched each other, meaning that they were made from matching fabrics and furs.
In addition to accessories, the sleeves, necklines and hoods of Winter coats often were trimmed in fur. Sometimes, dress gloves, as well as the collars of dresses, were lined in fur. Men’s hats occasionally were trimmed in fur, as well.
