Remember those old commercials that portrayed the Maytag repairman lounging comfortably in a chair, feet kicked up and apparently suffering from boredom due to a lack of incoming service calls? Well, I have to say I find those advertisements to be just a tad far-fetched. I recently purchased a Maytag dryer and soon discovered it to be the worst household product that I have ever owned.
Awhile back, my husband and I went to our local Home Depot in search of a washer and dryer set. We went with Maytag, in part, because of those memorable and poignant ads and also because we truly believed that they were a well established company with a fine reputation. We spent over $1,000 for the pair, but were soon disappointed.
The dryer, a part of their “Legacy Series,” promises heavy duty commercial quality, oversize capacity and more. It has many drying options from air fluff to wrinkle release. The manual gives clear and concise descriptions of each and every feature.
So what’s the problem? Where do I begin? First of all, from the day of installation, when you open the dryer door the clothes literally fall out of the machine and onto the floor – clean clothes on a dirty basement floor! My husband, a tradesman and plumber, tested the level of the machine itself and it checks out fine. The inner body of the dryer seems to be positioned on a slight angle causing the contents to just fall right out.
Next, the lint filter seems to be extremely flawed. It is such a cheap piece of plastic that it cracks in places when we pull it out for cleaning. Also, the lint spills out of the compartment and into the machine causing a trail of fuzz, hair and dust to wrap around the dyer’s inner lip. Because of the excessive release of lint into the machine, our clothes are becoming damaged. Brand new sweaters and sweatshirts are covered in dirty fuzz and black items don’t appear clean and crisp. I’ve even tried to dry our clothes inside out to no avail. My handy hubby has thoroughly inspected the dryer’s exhaust system, ducts and joints and everything seems to be functioning normally. And, in the troubleshooting section of the manual there is absolutely no information regarding the lint trap.
Granted, we have yet to call a trusty Maytag serviceman, but we just feel that a dryer that is only a few months old should not need to be serviced. It should work! Eventually, we will have it repaired and maybe Maytag will redeem themselves in our eyes. Still, it’s disappointing. Come to think of it, the Maytag washing machine is nothing to brag about either. It’s loud and sometimes just stops mid-cycle, but that’s a whole other review!
