Wizard of Oz Birthday Party Ideas

Birthday Cake Ideas, Wizard of Oz

The appeal of the classic movie The Wizard of Oz seems to transcend generations. I remember the first time I watched The Wizard of Oz. It was in the 1980’s and I was smitten Dorothy and her friends, and of course the Wizard of Oz music. Fast forward to the new millennia and my own daughter thought she wouldn’t like the movie The Wizard of Oz.

“It looks too old,” she explained.

Saying something like an “oldie but goodie” would have only confirmed that I was ancient and unlikely to know a good movie when I saw one.

Sure it was old. It was old when I was a little girl. It was old when my own mom was a little girl. In fact, The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939 and was among the first color movies.

Finally my daughter watched it on her own and a new love affair began. We had a little Dorothy complete with Toto in a basket for Halloween and soon the announcement came that this year’s birthday party would have a Wizard of Oz theme. With the Wizard of Oz coming out on Blu Ray there will likely be many more new Wizard of Oz fans and Wizard of Oz birthday parties.

Wizard of OZ birthday cake ideas

There are a variety of ways to create a Wizard of Oz themed cake.

Rainbows:

You can either create a rainbow on a sheet cake using candies or sprinkles or create a cupcake rainbow with cupcakes.

To create a cupcake rainbow you will need 24 cupcakes and five rainbow colors of icing. Create the rainbow by arching five rows of cupcakes with 7 in the first row, 6 in the second row, five in the third row, four in the fourth row and three in the fifth row.

Think you don’t really need 24 full size cupcakes? Use mini cupcakes instead.

Yellow Brick Road:

My daughter wanted a yellow brick road birthday cake. We used a bright yellow icing on a sheet cake. We drew “bricks” in the icing with a toothpick and filled in the picks with gold sprinkles.

Wizard of OZ cake toppers:

You can also find Wizard of OZ cake toppers featuring Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin man with the title and the Wicked Witch in the background. The Wizard of Oz cake toppers can be found at Amazon.com for around $14.00 or less.

Wizard of Oz party foods

Rainbow fruit platter:

Going with the rainbow theme again you can create a healthy party platter for your Wizard of Oz themed birthday party. A rainbow fruit tray with green grapes, blueberries, oranges slices, strawberries and pineapple chunks will be simple yet attractive.

Wizard of Oz decorations

DIY on the Computer:

We designed and printed signs to hang over the tables at our Wizard of Oz party. Over the food table we created a sign with a rainbow that read “Dorothy’s Rainbow Café.” We also had a milk shake making table and created a sign with a scarecrow that read “Scarecrow’s Shake Shack.” Use your computer, printer and your imagination to add some easy but special touches for your Wizard of Oz party.

Table Cloths:

You can find cloth or plastic tablecloths in the classic picnic checked pattern in blue that will resemble Dorothy’s blue checked dress.

Centerpiece:

Search your basket collection and stuffed animal collections and create a cheap and easy Toto centerpiece.

“Somewhere over the rainbow…”

Use rainbow piñatas, rainbow windsocks or rainbow crafts to add the finishing touches to your Wizard of Oz birthday party.
