Besides the wedding dress and perfect location, flowers are a vital part of a wedding. The wrong flowers can ruin a wedding’s atmosphere. In winter, it is even harder to find flowers that are in season and appropriate for a winter theme. After working at a florist’s in college, I learned about many different flowers. Here are some of my favorite flowers for winter 2010.
White flowers
White flowers are a perfect backdrop for splashes of color in any arrangement or bouquet. Being synonymous with snow, white flowers are always a wonderful choice for winter. In 2010, white roses, gardenias and stephanotis will make a winter wedding look modern and elegant. Roses look great tightly bundled together for a bride’s bouquet. Gardenias are beautiful and fragrant. These flowers can be expensive so maybe just use them for your bouquets and boutonnieres.
Greenery
Green always makes an arrangement look fresh. Try holly, rosemary and baby’s breath for accents in all of your arrangements. Green hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers. They are ideal for winter since they often wilt in hot climates. However, they might be more expensive since their blooming season is typically in the summer. Try these paired with bells of Ireland and some ivory roses.
Red
For those of us who celebrate Christmas, red is an essential color for invoking a holiday spirit. Poinsettias are a classic holiday flower that will add festivity to your wedding. Mix them with red and white roses for beautiful holiday look. Cranberries are another good red option. Put sticks of cranberries into a bouquet or use loose cranberries at the base of a vase. Cranberries are a great accent for white and chocolate colors too.
Cool tones
There is something about a blue flower that makes me think of cold weather. Both lilacs and blue delphiniums are both in season in winter. Both of these flowers look magnificent with white roses. Hyacinths are another flower that blooms in purple. It is a stocky flower that pairs well with roses and tulips.
Colorful
Bring summer colors into your sinter wedding. For a fun, casual wedding, gerbera daisies come in a plethora of colors and look fantastic simply bound together with a bright ribbon. Carnations are also a fun, thrifty flower that look great when put together in a multitude of colors. Just be careful of the ones that are dyed. For instance, blue and green carnations often look cheap and elementary. This would look fun in a wedding where the bridesmaids are all wearing different colored dresses. If you do go this route keep all the other decorations understated. For instance, use white tablecloths and simple candles for additional decorations.
For any wedding, be specific with your florists. Give certain flowers and colors for each arrangement and bouquet. This will eliminate any surprises on you wedding day.
