Why Did Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy Break Up?

Jim Carrey

It’s been an active year for celebrity breakups, but this one came as a shocker. Comedian Jim Carrey and his long time girlfriend, Jenny McCarthy, announced their breakup last week. But the end of their 5 year relationship wasn’t amidst tabloid rumors like so many of the other recent celebrity splits. Instead, according to People, the couple ended their relationship “amicably”. Huh? Who does that anymore?

I wanted to get to the bottom of what caused the split of one of Hollywood’s seemingly happiest couples, but with no nasty tabloid accusations, mistresses coming out of the woodwork, or “he said/she saids” it appears to be a relatively mature break up. At least so far.

Indeed, the couple had their obstacles. McCarthy spent a lot of her time as an activist for autism, but Carrey was often seen supporting her (McCarthy’s son, Evan, was diagnosed with autism at age 3). McCarthy even referred to Carrey as “The Autism Whisperer” because he was so good with her son. They appeared on TV shows together- like Oprah and The Ellen DeGeneres Show– to talk about autism- and their love for each other.

But because everything seemed so happy , the couple’s break up came as a surprise to many fans.

ABC News reported that Carrey’s long battle with depression could have been a factor in the couple’s split.

And then there’s the tweets. Carrey is a Twitter fan, as his numerous daily tweets show. Should fans read into his negative tweets about Tiger Woods’ wife, Elin, which seemed to ascertain that she was partially to blame for her husband’s infidelity? Last week Carrey tweeted, ” No wife is blind enough to miss that much infidelity. Elin had 2 b a willing participant on the ride 4 whatever reason”

Later he tweeted, “I want 2 make it CLEAR that I do not condone infidelity at all, but 2 some degree the responsibility 4 it is shared by both people!”

After receiving flack for his Elin tweets, Carrey tweeted on Saturday, “My people called and said I might have to tame my tweets a little. So here goes…I’m going to make a sandwich now. peanut butter.(sigh)”

Twitter even played a role in the announcement of the couple’s break up, when Carrey posted last Tuesday, “Jenny and I have just ended our 5yr relationship. I’m grateful 4 the many blessings we’ve shared and I wish her the very best! S’okay!”

McCarthy did the same, tweeting just minutes later, “Im so grateful for the years Jim and I had together. I will stay committed to Jane and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart.”

McCarthy’s Twitter has been quiet since April 6th, with the exception of a thank you tweet to celeb blogger, Perez Hilton.

While Carrey and McCarthy never married, in 2008 McCarthy told Access Hollywood , “We are already married in our hearts.” And indeed, a 5 year relationship is looooong by Hollywood standards.

Late last week, FOX News reported the surprising news that Jenny McCarthy has also decided to close her school for autistic children, Teach2Talk Academy.

Apparently it just wasn’t a good week for her. Or Jim.
